Rudy was just giving a speech wearing a yarmaluke...but he's a Catholic.
Am I the only one who finds that weird? Is it an acceptable thing to do? I truly don't know...I mean, if Jewish people are ok with that, then that's their deal.
I would just find it really odd if Joe Lieberman came to a Catholic group wearing a crucifix or holding the rosary.

It's probably not on a par with the idea of Lieberman wearing a crucifix. A Kippa or yarmulke is merely a minimalist way of covering the head, as orthodox Judaism requires all people, but esp men, to do to show respect and deference to God. You can wear a baseball cap or a fedora, and in Israel many men do, even to synagogue. So the kippa itself has no other religious meaning. Ultra-orthodox women, for that matter, wear wigs, which seems bizarre to me.
It is open sucking up on Rudy's part, is all.

Well, in truth I'm actually not a total hawk, but I'm not a dove either -- I'm more like an angry pigeon flying over the political arena after a really big meal. -Abba Gav

Thanks...that was my base question...I didn't know if it held any religious significance. I've only ever seen Jews wear one. I didn't know they could wear caps or fedoras to synagogue.
Yes, the sucking up is very open and that in itself is obnoxious enough. I just wondered if he was being offensive as well as obnoxious.

A kippa is considered more appropriate, since I think Rabbis do have to wear them as opposed to other hats, and here in the US I imagine it's all you'd see, but it's just a head covering and that's what really matters.
They have them there embroidered with favorite team logos, all kinds of interesting stuff. I haven't seen a crucifix done in team logo yet.

Would have been interesting if they had an Arkansas Razorback Kippah...
Gators, Longhorns, Terrapins, UCLA Bears, Crimson Tide... and U of A -- but no Sun Devils.
Sikh turban and Jewish Kippah are the only 'mandatory' identifying religious headgear I can think of, for men anyhow; many Muslims weat a turban or Keffiyah, but it's quite optional, and I'm not coming up with a lot of other identifying religious headgear.
