McCain admits he "doesn't really understand economics."

Sweet! Just what we need.

Quote:
At a recent meeting with the Wall Street Journal editorial board, Republican presidential candidate John McCain admitted he “doesn’t really understand economics” and then pointed to his adviser and former Senate colleague, Phil Gramm - whom he had brought with him to the meeting - as the expert he turns to on the subject, The Huffington Post has learned.

Perhaps he could take a lesson or two from my guy.

that is kinda scary, but at least he's honest about it, instead of pretending that he is all-knowing on econ (like some other politicians)

it would be awesome if the winner of the GOP takes on Paul as an economic counsaltant

because Pariah has the trademark on them. UC wouldn't dare tread on Pariah's turf.

While I think this is damaging to his image during an election year, it doesn't bother me too much. I wonder how many of our presidents really understood economics. It's not something you can do part-time and have a good grasp of, IMO. That's why you have economic advisors.

But, that said, McCain has lost all room to smirk at Paul when he starts rambling on about his economic ideas.

I believe Josiah Bartlett (Martin Sheen) on the West Wing won the nobel prize in economics.

That great, but my point still remains....and I honestly don't know the answer: how many presidents really understand economics?

Obviously, Bush doesn't. Clinton obviously did. Bush Sr.? Regan? Carter? Ford?

...You get my point. Is clinton the exception to the rule, or would McCain be the exception?

It could be argued that FDR at least knew what to do economically to get the US out of the Great Depression. I would assume that took a strong grasp of Economics....

As an aside, I would argue that the understanding of economics is inversely related to the ability to achieve ends by force/threat of force. I doubt that the land grabs of the early to mid 19th Century took much economics. The Louisiana and Gadsden purchases in particular were terribly unfair in the favor of the US by any economic measure....

I don't think it is a bad thing so much to not be an economics expert, but shouldn't he say something like..."even though I've got a firm grasp on the economics of our nation, one of my advisors on the economy is so and so, and I've brought him here today to be part of this discussion."

Of course, when so and so does all the talking and McCain just sits there grinning and winking, the jig is up.
