Maybe Palin isn't dense

As a McCain supporter, I've been growing more mortified by the day at how seemingly stupid Palin is, based on portions of her interview on ABC and especially her laughable performance with Katie Couric. It's been enough to make me take another look at Obama (although that lasted about half a second). But I've thought over the past few days that maybe it's time for Palin to bow out, due to whatever fictitious circumstances the campaign can manufacture, and for Romney or Pawlenty or whoever else to join the ticket.

But after I saw the two videos below, from the Alaska governor debate in 2006, it's apparent Palin isn't stupid. She did pretty well, and although she does have at least one extremist and unsavory position (no abortion unless mother about to die), she's obviously pretty bright. If I was the McCain campaign, I might buy airtime to run clips from this debate.

Anyway, I thought these might be good to link to, as the Palin=moron trend is accelerating, and after viewing these videos I think it's unfair, or at least grossly overstated.

EDIT: and yes, I do realize how pathetic it is that I'm surprised and encouraged to discover that the person I want to become Vice President of the United States isn't a complete idiot.

I don't think she is a moron. Not real sharp by national standards maybe but being honest not a blithering idiot.

What she really is is utterly inexperienced in national issues, politics, diplomacy and other major topics. When you add that to her fairly extreme religious views it makes for a scary [for our country] package.

It seems fairly clear how she made governor. In Alaska you have to be republican -- check. In the GOP the more religious conservative you are the easier the primaries are -- check.

For what it's worth, I don't think she's an idiot. I just believe she is way out of her league. She's "simple" and trying to pretend she's not IMO. I don't think she's thought or even cared about what goes on outside of Alaska.

I think you're reaching with this debate from '06. I watched the whole debate a week or two ago, I came away feeling she kept her answers short, didn't get into any specifics, and I came away unimpressed. Now I know after these past few weeks you're looking for something, anything to suggest this woman isn't dumber than a rock. I think you're standards for her at this point are very low.

that's funny.

does anyone realize the tonal shift there's been on this board during this election cycle vs. the 2004 election. It actually seems like MOST of us can actually see GLARING faults within our own ticket and we aren't just blindly supporting those in our corner. That certainly wasn't the case with Bush v. Kerry. No one would give an inch, centi-meter or mili-meter on anything during those days.

It kind of gives me hope for the country.

I agree cheese. It's part of why I'm not going to be as angry, depressed or disenfranchised as I have felt about the last few previous elections. No matter who wins. Although, I'm pretty confident it's going to be Obama.

The problem I see with McCain/Palin versus Obama/Biden is all the knowledge is with one part of the ticket with McCain/Palin. John is basically the whole show, and if something happens to him.... However, with Obama/Biden, Biden is arguably the best foreign policy Senator we have, and arguably one of the most knowledgeable judiciary Senators we have right now, too. So if Obama needs advice on foreign policy or Supreme Court nominees, of which Biden used to chair the committee that grilled them, he can turn to Biden.

Even Palin's energy expertise is somewhat limited to oil, which John McCain already knows about. I don't see McCain really asking her to shape any policies. She's there to get out the vote for John, imho.

Palin is going to kick Biden's tail in the debate.

Too many factors are at play in which the Democrats and Media have already decided she's a hillbilly baby pushing moron that shouldn't be in the same room as someone as enshrined as Biden.

It's going to be far more easier for Palin to impress the Americn people now than if she was protrayed as some type of "superwoman".

Democrats need to make it it harder (not easy) for her to impress and republicans need to make sure she limits the material that pops up on SNL.

Agree with you there. The GOP has been excellent in lowering expectations - it always starts about a week or two before the debates. Palin won't come off as the next Kissinger, but to thing that all she's going to do is drool on herself is a big mistake.

i think expectations are so low that all Palin has to do is NOT drool on herself and she ends up looking like the winner.

Wow. Look at the Pubs continually trying to lower the bar....

If the litmus test for being a qualified VP is simply "not drooling on yourself", then I'd ventur to say that 99.9% of Americans are therefore qualified....

BTW the Washington Post is reporting that CBS withheld 2 clips of Palin giving even more embarassing answers during the Couric interview.
