Going after the Independent Voter

I've had the democrats come by my house on three separate occasions in the past few weeks. Once asking questions on how I feel about a local congressman (but with an Obama plug in the schpiel), and twice about Obama. Each time I asked them how they got my name, and it's because I'm a registered Independent.

I haven't had a single visit from the Republicans.

If the Independent voter is key to this election, it seems to me that the Obama camp is making a much more concerted effort to sway us.

Just food for thought.

I think there is something to that in a sense. For me it has become all about what I can do for myself. I don't need anyone to come to my home to tell me or even ask me who I am voting for... they will find out soon enough.

I would consider myself independent, but independent in the greatest sense of the word. I don't WANT people to "sway" me I want to figure it out myself.

Unfortunately as time passes I am seeing more and more that democrat = dependent in the eyes and actions of many and that hurts me to my core because for as long as I can remember I have been told that democrat was the way to go.

I'm not trying to be deep with this post, I'm just talking about people who are registered as "independent" or "unaffiliated."

I don't mind people coming to the door to talk to me about this stuff, so long as they're not put off when I talk to them about Ron Paul.

I understand your point. I was just expressing mine.. sort of branching off of it.

There's been talk in the political circles that the Obama campaign has put together a massive ground operation in order to go after the indie vote and to get the vote out on election day. I guess you're seeing the fruits of that work.

What advantages can you give me for registering as an independent? I am a registered Democrat, but on financial issues I tend to lean Republican at this point in my life.

The real problem I have is most Dems and Reps lean way more extreme than I am.

On the tax issue, I am a minority (no kids) and I don't feel my vote matters to either candidate.

You must have completly missed the Ron Paul campaign. We could have used your support.

I think that is where obama can reach over.....aside from mccain being a decorated P.O.W. that will hit home with a lot of people. before obama won the primary race he was much more appealing to a non rep/dem such as I. but I think he has lost some of that overall with all of the side-shows going on in this race....going back to the tough primary he had with hillary....rev wright etc....then the backlash from the hillary voters and hillary herself. all of the voters that said they would vote for hillary but would vote for mccain if she lost? i never understand that when you consider how much in common hillary and obama have compared to that of senator mccain and hillary. what kind of logic is that?

then you have all of the side shows in the general election first palin....then the whole economic crisis. He needs to stay strong and not back down to mccain on foreign policy.....where mccain is trying to strike obama. but he also needs to hit all of the other issues where he can set himself apart to the non republican voters. I think the partisanship also turns many the independents/no party voters...off and they choose not to vote. then the ones that do vote often make a tough choice looking for the lesser of two evils....even sometimes voting on issues that can be irrelevant to being president of the USA. that's why it's unfortunate that you have all of these dumb attacks and comments like the lipstick stuff/ bridge to no where(biden) etc. people hear that stuff and if they don't pay close attention they really don't know the truth. then through all of the uncalled for negative attacks...especially in terms of foreign policy.....it takes away from the time spent on debating the real issues americans face hear at home. the sad thing is our military is used for political posturing. that kind of makes me sick.

Why would I register for a party who's platforms I don't believe in?

I count 33 Obama offices in Colorado. http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/cooffices

I expect they will keep knocking on your door until you tell them definitively who you are going to be voting for.

I'm not complaining. My point is only this: why am I not hearing from McCain people? CO is supposed to be a hotly contested state this year. You'd think they'd want to get their people out, too.

As far as I know, McCain doesn't have a strong presence on the ground in many of the new battleground states. What I have heard is that they are reallying heavily on TV advertising instead. To the extent they have volunteers on the ground, they will do phone banking rather than the door to door canvassing.
