Talking to a friend, she's intelligent, open minded, has her Masters degree (MFT), well read. I asked her who she was going to vote for if she had her choice among the big 3 (HRC, BO, JMcC). She said she was happy with a BO or JMcC, and would vote for John.
Asked her why she vote for McCain over Obama. Her response: "He would be assassinated. I don't want to be partially responsible for his death."
I pressed her further - she couldn't respond beyond that line. I even went so far to push her buttons (in case it was an emotional reason that she didn't want to state) - still nothing beyond that (and I did get her angry).
Can anyone give me a bit of insight to this?

edit: It's my opinion that that decision is for BO to make. He knows what the risk is. If he is choosing to put himself in that position, then I am willing to vote for him (since I want to...not "just because").
Yes, it's safe to assume that there are people who would want to assassinate Obama. He knows that and it's part of the job. I'm going to vote for him knowing that because I refuse to let fear affect my vote. I think it's very silly of your friend to think that way.

Heck IMO, I actually think Billary has a far greater chance of getting a JFK pulled on her than Obama...
Further, I will NEVER understand why anyone would think Obama has any greater chance of being picked off than anyone else running for or holding the office of the President. I mean, W is one of the most hated leaders our country has ever had, and he's still alive and tickin... If he can make (this far anyway...), I would Obama's chances are pretty darn good!

Key difference: Bush is white. Our society has come a long way in a short time but to put things in perspective Obama was born in 1961. African Americans couldn't even vote until 1965. There is still a lot of ignorance and hate here in America. Obama becoming president of the USA is a landmark achievement. The first non-white male to ever hold that post. If Colin Powell made a strong run for the presidency as a republican after Obama, he'd be in less danger, IMO. If he was the first, target on his back. There's always a higher risk for the trailblazer. Hell, Jackie Robinson received death threats for playing baseball with white people, what kind of reaction do you think a black president would receive?

Hank Aaron also received death threats - as did many other famous black athletes. As DO many black and white athletes still to this day. Also, do you believe that white presidents never did or don't receive death threats??

Of course they all do. Do you honestly think it's a 50/50 ratio? You do realize that there are still many white power groups operating in the US, right?

Uhhh.. sure... These are the people who are so damm good at repressing black people, right? The ones who find ways to keep black people from moving up in society? And the ones who systematically take out any black person who even appears to have a chance at rising through the ranks, be it politics, sports, media or the corporate environment, right? Yea - I read about those dudes all the time... mean 'lil buggers they are...

That's just it (and you'll have to take my word on this) - she's strong willed and stubborn, no doubt, but other than that- normal. Known her for just about as long as I've known my wife (wife's best friend). Even my wife was surprised when she said that.
For the record - I agree with you - Obama knows the risks and is willing to step up regardless (as I believe that any figure in public life has to make that choice). I won't let fear control my vote.

I'll spell things out to you slowly so you can follow the discussion here.
1. LV stated that he has a friend who wouldn't vote for Barack Obama because she thinks he'd be assassinated. He asked why someone would think this way.
2. Posters, including myself stated that she shouldn't vote based on that.
3. You asked why anyone thinks Obama has a greater chance of being assassinated that anyone else.
4. I pointed out the history of racism here and that, while it's not as rampant as it used to be, is still prevalent.
5. You, in happy fantasy world, made sarcastic comment.
As I stated in my first post of this thread, I think it's silly to not vote for Obama because of fears that he'll be assassinated. For one thing, with all of our safety precautions and technology it's unlikely that any president will be shot. It's hard to imagine any person on the planet being more protected.
For future reference, if you ask a question and someone gives an honest answer, try not being a jerk.

I'm sorry... This post seemed to indicate that you were in agreement that because Obama is black, that he does have a greater chance of being picked off than a "white" president. Maybe I read this wrong. If so, sorry about that...

Well, Reagan if he were still alive might have something to say about that...
I know a lot of people who are afraid he has a high chance of being an assassination target, but I also think Hillary would be, for slightly different reasons. However I don't know anyone who would vote for McCain for that reason. It's not like they're in any way similar!
He knows the risks. When he got the very early secret service coverage for himself and his family -- earlier than anyone ever has in a primary campaign I believe, for undisclosed reasons -- he said he and his wife had a long talk about the risks before he declared he was running.
He's not only the first person of color, which brings out one class of hate-nuts. He is believed by some people to be a secret jihadi agent, which brings out a whole 'nother class of psycho.

1. That was 27 years ago. Wouldn't you agree that technology and security has improved in the last 3 decades?
2. The way you phrased that sentence makes it sound like he was killed in office instead of dying at age 93. If you put more consideration in to how you said things you wouldn't have so many arguments here.
