In an open primary, any voter may vote in any party's primary. In all of these systems, a voter may participate in only one primary; that is, a voter who casts a vote for a candidate standing for the Republican nomination for president cannot cast a vote for a candidate standing for the Democratic nomination, or vice versa. A few states once staged a blanket primary, in which voters could vote for one candidate in multiple primaries, but the practice was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 2000 case of California Democratic Party v. Jones as violating the freedom of assembly guaranteed by the First Amendment.[citation needed]
since when? Used to be registered independent couldn't vote in either.
Exactly. And I think primaries are stupid and bad for our country. They tend to produce poor candidates for general elections and are a major reason elections tend to be the better of two evils.

my point, since it apparently wasn't as obvious as i thought it would be, was to get an informal idea of who the possible 2 candidates would be. we could then take the top two and have a vote off between them.
if that isn't enough reason, here's another one. i said:

The right of independents to vote in primaries is a state law as opposed to federal law. Arizona has a specific statute regarding registered independents' rights to vote in a primary. I don't know what the other states' laws are but in Arizona this is the law.
