Deja vu? McCain backed out of 2000 California presidential debate
This week's events on the presidential campaign trail may be mind-boggling. But this is not the first time the Arizona Senator has withdrawn from a presidential debate; he did it in California in 2000 against George W. Bush.
At the time, polls showed he was lagging seriously behind the then-Texas governor, and he said he would appear with the candidate on Sunday talk shows instead.
Still, that left him with some 'splainin' to do, as Ricky Ricardo used to say.
What happened? Facing severe blowback and criticism for his decision to shun a debate in the nation's most populous state, McCain finally agreed at the last minute to participate via video in the March 2 forum -- a move that severely disadvantaged him.
Our story noted ''he was seen by viewers in a surreal ``Max Headroom'' fashion via a television mounted on a third podium next to two live participants. That allowed Bush to interact with both questioners and the audience -- underscoring his presence by leaning on the podium, emerging from behind it and, at one point, standing mischievously next to (former Ambassador Alan Keyes.)''
So far, we're looking at a repeat of the drama -- will he come in person? by video? not at all? -- regarding the show Friday night in Mississippi. What happens should a bailout deal not be finalized? Stay tuned.
