Saying that non-whites are "ethnic" implies that white is a basis and other races are deviating from that basis. Why? Because using that line of speaking inherently asserts that whiteness is not an ethnicity, it just is. To be clear, it's like saying "whiteness is whereas non-whiteness is not". This reminds me of a co-worker I knew, everytime someone asked her where she was from she would always respond, "I don't know... I am white!" Always cracked me up. "No, no where is your family from initially", they would ask. "What are you talking about, I told you, I am white!"
