Why are we the way we are??
Why do people behave the way they do?? Is it genetic?? Or is it environmental and learned behaviors?? Or are we all just predestined to be a certain way??
http://www.curledup.com/grtbrain.htm
For example......if you had depression:
Would you go to a Psychiatrist and get medicine for it?? A Psychiatrist would ask questions like if depression and other mental illness runs in your family. Benjamin Rush is considered the Father of Psychiatry.
Or....
Would you go to a Psychologist and talk about your problems and try to get other ways to deal with your depression?? A Psychologist would probably ask you a series of questions on how you feel about a certain situation...Cognitive Behavior Therapy would probably be prescribed for you. Freud is considered the Father of Psychology....BF Skinner has some fun experiments if you are interested.
EDIT: Fine job NEZ. You couldn't have looked this over real quick to make sure it was going into the POD Section.
2nd EDIT: Gracias to the Mod or Admin that cleaned up my mess. Can I hire you full time?? I tend to stick my foot in my boca alot.

Nurture. We are all born a clean slate. Some things are written on that slate for us by others. Some things we write on our own....

I think it is both.
The environment (nurture) plays a huge part, probably more so than the natural disposition.
However, I think personalities and how we react to things are very different from the moment of birth. I was stunned how totally different my children were from the moment they were born. But then I don't think all of that was genetics. I think part of that is spiritual i.e. the human soul.

How about the fact that there are differing experiences and interpretations in the womb? That seems like a more logical explanation than a "soul"....

I used to be a hardcore Behaviorlist.....but after becoming a father I am seeing that you don't exactly control who you are quite all the way.
My son acts exactly like I did, I'm told, when I was a kid. He couldn't have learned that.
As for myself, I'm morphing into my father more and more each day.
When I'm in the car with the kids, they make it their duty to drive me nuts. When they fight and argue and talk over each other it drives me haywire. I literally have to turn the radio up or my brain will melt out through my ears. That has to be genetic.
But, I learned this fun lil saying when they start doing that......"Kids keep it down, I can't see the road."
I don't even know what that means but I keep saying it. Just like my dad would say it to us. Like making noise affects vision.
Also, from my father, me and my brothers are all leg and butt men. That must be genetic, if he taught us that he is kind of a sicko.

I just remember being cramped and bored.
Maybe that explains why I hate traffic so much.

Sometimes I wonder if psychologists read internet message boards just for fun. I bet it would be like a sport to them.

They also responded differently to the same or similar stimulus (like music) while in the womb. What does that say?
I consider myself very logical and not particularly religious. However, nothing I have seen makes me discount or deny a spiritual nature of humans. I find it illogical to deny it out of hand when there is no way we can know empirically one way or the other.

Lack of empirical proof is not evidence that something "might" exist, but I digress....
I think that there are experiences and responses to stimuli in the womb that begin to form thought processes. Music, as you mentioned, is a great example. I don't know the age difference of your kids, but I'm sure it's at lease 2 years. Well, 2 years for music is a long time and thousands of new songs come out in that period. So there is a different stimulus. I think that a fetus responds to beats and rythyms and possibly melodies and harmonies differently. This creates a different environment to respond to.
The conversations you had with your wife were different. What you did was different. The stressors and stimuli to your wife were different. So many things are different that you don't think about until you think about it. That's, IMO, how babies are born with different personalities.
The reason that your son acts like you is that you, like I do with my daughter, try to recreate the pleasant and enjoyable things from your childhood for him. As parents, we recreate ourselves. They are learning from us, so they are like us....

Genetics, Enivornmental, Psycho-sexual, and Learned Behavior all play equal parts in who we are.
Carl Jung makes a fantastic read. Of all psycho-theories, I believe he is the closest with his stages of development.
