The Nomination of Judge John G. Roberts

Okay President Bush has nominated Judge John G. Roberts to be the next supreme court justice.

You can almost feel the advocacy groups on the left and the right sharpening their knives for a knock-down drag out fight inwhich we're gonna get flooded with advertisements on tv, radio, newspapers and the internet. They gotta spend their money somehow...right?

Conservatives want a candidate who would move the court toward the right on such issues as abortion and affirmative action....Senate Democrats are preparing to fight any nominee who might undermine sensitive issues such as Roe vs. Wade, etc.

Perhaps Rove's plan all along was to get us to fear a reactionary extremist nominee, then be relieved with a relative moderate.

"Oh, well, he's not nearly as bad as we expected...sure we'll vote for him."

Myself being somewhat of a social liberal, I think Roberts was a well thought out and smart choice. He should be acceptable to a majority of the Senators and win confirmation. I think he could very well be a wild card as Souter and the person he is replacing were. If he is true to his belief that a SC justice should not rewrite the laws, I think we will be a swing vote just as O'connor has been.

What makes you think Rove had anything to do with this? Bush personally intervied 5 of the people he was looking at. If you think the White House can't function without Rove, you are going to be mightly disappointed if he does go.

I think Karl Rove does the majority of the strategizing. I don't think George Bush could even pronounce strategizing.

I agree that Bush could have done worse, but I voted no because of his lack of track record from the Bench.

I will have to see what comes up during Senate hearing to make a completly informed decision. Based on what I have read on him, he is not my ideal version of a candidate as of yet.

That being said, you never know how a judge is going to act once he/she has a lifetime appointment, because they are no longer beholden to any one party or political leaning.

I just hope he is not as conservative as he seems to be to me right now...
