Should Pelosi step down?

Its no secret that Pelosi was fined in 2004 for having a "fund-raising committee...improperly accepting donations over federal limits."

USATODAY.com - Pelosi PAC fined $21000 by federal elections officials

Pelosi was caught violating the clearest and most basic law of all, the limits on contributions. Her fine was $21,000.

Two other Democrats have been fined in the deal because of receiving money from the committee overseen by Pelosi.

Pelosi has been in the forefront in "campaign finance reform and has made comments such as these:

Quote:
In a sign of how Democrats plan to use DeLay's indictment, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said it "is the latest example that Republicans in Congress are plagued by a culture of corruption."
Quote:
"The fact is that no matter whatever Mr. DeLay's problems are, they are almost minor compared to the abuse of power of the Republicans in terms of the ethics process that is a bigger issue than Mr. DeLay," Pelosi said at a news conference.
"It is about the integrity of the House, of upholding a high ethical standard."
Aside from the amount of $ involved...the violations are the same inwhich DeLay got indicted for money laundering in Texas.

Is it time for Pelosi to step down as House Minority Leader?

This is an absolute travisty. How could she do such a thing. She must be as crooked as a stick. Impeach I say...Impeach....

(Now this is what would be said if the person was a Republican)

I say...Pay the money back and get back to business.

Pay the money from what? The money was already spent and the shops closed.

yeah, i wouldn't care so much if she weren't so vocal and morally superior about delay. but hey, if you're going to open your mouth about other people, be prepared to swallow a dose of your own smug.

I voted yes, she should step down immediately.

Nothing is more annoying than hypocrisy.

Yep, she should step down. We need to do some serious house cleaning on both sides.

Was she indicted by a grand jury for a criminal offence ?

Not being familiar with either case that much how do the two compare ?

Is Delay facing jail time if convicted or just a fine like Pelosi ?

Since she was fined I assumed guilt had already been established. The Delay question is a good one though.

DeLay takes a 2-1 lead....

Texas grand jury indicts DeLay on new charge
House majority leader charged with money laundering

BREAKING NEWS

Updated: 6:10 p.m. ET Oct. 3, 2005
AUSTIN, Texas - A Texas grand jury indicted U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay on a new charge of money laundering Monday, less than a week after another grand jury leveled a conspiracy charge that forced DeLay to temporarily step down as House majority leader.

Both indictments accuse DeLay and two political associates of conspiring to get around a state ban on corporate campaign contributions by funneling the money through a political action committee to the Republican National Committee in Washington.

The RNC then sent back like amounts to distribute to Texas candidates in 2002, the indictment alleges.

Nope. Apparently california money laundering laws are not as stringent as Texas (where DeLay got indicted). So in short you will never see her have to answer to a jury from california.

Pelosi was found guilty by the FEC. Rather than refer the case to the Justice Department for prosecution - the FEC allowed Pelosi's two committees to negotiate "conciliation agreements" under which they were fined a total of $21,000. So the federal issue is closed.

DeLay could indeed possibly be facing jail time.

Because DeLay got indicted (Republican rules - not house) stipulated he step down from his post. The Democrats do not have a rule requiring Pelosi to resign, even though she admitted to the violations and paid the fine.

If these are equivilent, way isn't Delay also facing a federal probe ?

It also seems you are saying that under the law in CA Pelosi was guilty but of a lesser offence than Delay is facing in Texas?

Otherwise why was she not facing jail time as well ?

Right now it appears that Delay is facing a much more serious offence. What are they saying he did ?

Ok, I read up on both and not being an attorney I am still unclear but it seems that there may be significant differences between the two.

It appears TD is accused of deliberatly trying to cicumvent election law in texas.

Pelosi claims that they had checked with the FEC and were told what they were doing was ok. If so this was a mistake.

Quote:
"We checked with the FEC, we thought this was OK, when we found out it wasn't we did everything aboveboard and we've been complying with them," Daly said.
As they got off with a fine I tend to believe this. Conversely Tom Delay seems to be accused of deliberate deception.
