Stop rebuilding countries we defeat. If we get defeated no one will rebuild us.
Stop allowing the press to dictate our military
Stop allowing our presidents to take from our veterans benefits
For government jobs a verteran should not get the same amount of preference points as a minority or a women. Should get more.
Stop putting women into combat units. They only get to stay back in the rear when fighting happens and units must refill with guardsmen with little to no training.
Stop allowing females in the militry to cry sexual harrassment and have the man guilty until proven innocent.
Much more...

This is hard one because I have many options but I am sure most of you will come up with your own theories.
Yer asking civilians to tweek the military?
I noticed you can have more than one option...but I'm going to stick with two basic concepts: pull our troops out of cold war areas and keep pumping up the military hardware (i.e. technologically better equipment).
One of the more important things to realize is that threats to America overseas are no longer deterred by tanks, bombers and aircraft carriers.
I believe the U.S. has plenty of firepower...but I do think communications (ie. being able to handle a cyber attack) is vulnerable.
I don't know how to answer adjusting enlistment for regular, reserves, national guard folks except to have very good pay and compensation packages.
As far as combining the branches...I doubt that could ever happen.
Absolutely no draft...however I do see the merits of having a mandatory enlistment of 2 years for continuity.
btw...I'm more convinced that you need someone with a true military background to run the pentagon.
Seeing how Rummy immersed himself in the operational planning for Iraq (much to the chagrin of most of the armed forces)...lets not forget that he butted heads with tommy franks about the size of troops and the strategy.
Granted Rummy wants to shake the cold war 'mentality'...but methinks he's not the one to do it.
true DEFENSE as a priority.
High tech.
Defend our ports and borders.
Track and register all foreigners within our borders.
No foreign adventures to fulfill insane neoCON plans from the early 90's.

Good but upon occasion a good Defense is a great Offense

When the U.S. can become self sufficient, yes. I would change 'no' to 'minimize'. And the U.S. has been doing these foreign adventures way before the 90's!!!

Is JustAndy Andichrist? The neoCON gave it away. I must have missed that

yeah - it's me!
I changed my name so as not to be so provocative to the religionists.
Our problem today is not so much with nations - we can thump any one or 2 of those at a time.
Who would invade us? - oh I forgot - there's 100's of thousands of illegal immigrants invading us every year.
As far as the hornets nest of Islamist terrorism we've stirred up by meddling in their part of the world - that's not an army or a nation - it's a big syndicate that calls for a different strategy.

I know this is gonna sound Morbid, sick, demented, whatever I believe you should always have a strong veteran leadership. Training can only do so much. Conflicts provide that veteran leadership. It doesn't have to be an all out war (like Iraq) but it does have to have some hazards and experiences to keep the troops up the tasks for the specific theater, time, etc...

I envy the Swiss - every adult is a member of the militia - and trained and REQUIRED to own a rifle, they have anti aircraft missile banks in the mountainsides, charges rigged to cause rockslides and take out their bridges

Increase the size of the Armed Forces so we are not so reliant on Reserves/Guard troops for long conflicts.
Return the National Guard to it's primary duty, guard the U.S, etc.
Beef up Border Security - the Coast Guard is under-manned, equipped.
Stop using the Defense Budget as pork - stop spending money on equipment the Military doesn't need, just because it is built in Senator A's state.
Allow all citizens to enlist in the military (but that is a special topic for my next POD week).
