POD: Our Role In Iraq
Remember.... This poll is what you think it will end up being, not what you want it to be.....
The poll assumes that we'll have a strong civilian contractor presence there for a very long time.....

Those permanent air bases won't go away. Just another Korea/Berlin scenario. Can you say forever, or until the oil runs dry?

Yep. And, after our investment we should stick around awhile to make sure it sticks.

It really will depend upon how the Iraq government develops...
I think that the U.S. intends to be there long term, however the Iraqi gov't may have different ideas, and may eventually request our exit. But as long as those in power in Iraq benefit from U.S. presence we will be there; same as in Saudi Arabia, etc.

It is part of the strategic commands policy to never leave a country completely once we get a foothold. There will always be a base or bases on some scale there.
For example Clinton said we would be out of yugoslavia by 99. We are still there. Those bases are permanant now.

By the time the 2008 elections roll around, we will have had a very significant reduction in troop levels. We will still have troops there, but they will be mostly out of harms way and will continue to train the Iraqi troops.
Unless civil war breaks out, this will be accomplished.

If Bosnia was such a success and we were there 10 years then we will be in Iraq at least that long. Probably longer.
