POD: Organized Media Purpose

Always thought this was pretty clear cut but have learned over the last few years that there are differing opinions as to what the organized media's purpose is.

Primary - meaning thier main objective.
Mass media - meaning most Organized news agencies. (ABC, CBS, FOX, CNN, etc. - not Op-Ed, Bloggs, etc)

Cover and report events, and STFU about your own personal bias, you jerkslags.

ARRGH...I hate the media.

Tonight, as you just saw on Lost, someone you know might be killed!!! By a household appliance....at ten.

At ten you find out some crag stuck his head in a garbage disposal and died, so all you other nomadbrains better be careful!!!

Thank god I decided in college not to report the news, but to influence it. The joys of doing a NBC internship...thank the lord. :notworthy :notworthy

To be true, cover and report, and inform the public are basically the same thing. You can't have one without the other.

Unless you mean cover and report on cat fashion shows...then yeah, I wanna change my vote. But I guess some people (must) want to be informed about the latest pussycat fashion.

Inform the Public but unfortunatly it is all about 'ratings' now.

So choices one and two are what is really going on.

No, PEOPLE bring good and bad.

Capitalism is a system of opportunity and economic freedom.

Capitalism is not an animated "thing" that imposes it's own will.

As it relates to the media, anti-capitalism and institutionalization is more of a problem than capitalism and competition.

Yes, people are responsible for their deeds. But capitalism rewards and supports certain behaviors - not all of them ethical.

Covering and reporting events is what I think their primary job should be. However, it can also be the same as informing the public as well because once the reporting is done then people can say they are informed. (to what level is debateable but at least on the facts).

I don't believe that it is the media's place to try to influence public opinion directly and deliberately. If reported facts affect the majority of Americans to take a particular position then that is fine. What would be wrong is if the media takes facts and only reports them in a particular light for the sole purpose of taking one side or the other on an issue.

Unbiased, fair and balanced (just to get you Fox haters out there.. ) is how I would like to see the media report news.
