Should publicly supported education programs include the distribution of condoms? (In other words, should public schools be able to give their students condoms if they want them?)

Definitely in College. The student health services should be allowed to distribute condoms. In fact I used to get my condoms from there when I was in school. If they weren't available to me I probably wouldn't have used them.

Well, yes. I think the issue is that when you are in college you are (in most cases) an adult, 18 years old, so it's a non-issue.

Schools are for reading, writing and arithmatic. Anything else is out of scope. IMO
I agree, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case with school today. Teachers are expected to teach a lot more than what you've mentioned.
I think parents should be responsible for talking to their children about sex. My mom talked to me, told me if I started to have sex that she would make sure I was protected and, that if I didn't want to talk to her about it, I could talk to my aunt and she would make sure I was protected. But not all parents are that open about it.

In high school I think they should be available if they're asked for through a counselor...and they only get them after a counseling session (maybe...I just came up with that one). Anyway, I don't think they should be pushed to students, they should be requested.

Health apparently is an important topic at the high school level. I don't think they need to be pushed, but available. There is nothing to suggest the availability of condoms will make it more likely that teenagers have sex, but I think from our own experiences we know that using one can prevent unwanted pregnancies.
From your perspective that should mean less abortions. Yeah!
I have a couple of questions. Are high school age children able to purchase condoms? There not very expensive are they?
I have been married for 20+ years so I really have no idea. I realize that it may be embarassing for a teen-ager to purchase condoms, but wouldn't they be just as embarassed asking the school nurse for them?
Having a high school distribute condoms gives children the non-verbal message of the school authorities (teacher, adminitration) condoning the sexual activity of teens. I think that is the wrong message to be giving children.

Distributing condoms gives them the message that the administration doesn't have its head in the sand and actually cares about the health of the students.

Not to mention the message that condoms make sex safe.
The problem with that is that condoms don't always work.

Even if they're a couple of bucks, I would think inner-city kids would be more likely to go to the nurse for free ones than they would to go to the drug store and buy them (they're behind the counter these days so they can't be stolen).
Rich suburban kids? Yeah, they'd probably go to 7-11.

I don't think taxpayers should be footing the bill for lil' Jonny playing Hide the Salami.
If they want to do that then they need to recongize part of the cost is a financial one....and run to the Fascinations and spend $12 for 20 Trojans once every 2 years, Just like I have to.

I think a lot of condoms are donated (by NGOs), aren't they?
If not, what better way for companies to get loyal customers than to give away condoms to kids just starting out?
Krepitch, nice response....basically blew my whole argument up. I'm not ready to just hand lil' Jonny Trojans yet, though. I just think handing out condoms is treating the symptoms of what is going on here.....I'd rather see the condom companies pump money into the schools to update books, computer, raises for teacher, etc etc.
I understand the whole "kids are gonna do it anyways....might as well be safe." So do we let Miller and Coors fund free "Get sloshed in the School Cafeteria Fridays"?? That is also safe.

Ha ha. Yeah, just to clarify, I'm not an advocate of a "here are condoms, go ____" program. I think they can be an important part of a comprehensive sex education program, though.
I guess the difference with the beer thing is that drinking is illegal and sex isn't. Although if beer companies wanted to pay truckloads of cash to upgrade the books, computers, etc., I can't say I wouldn't be tempted.
