Debra Lafave

Mother Says No Trial

The mother of a 14-year-old boy in the Debra Lafave case says the former teacher should not face trial in Marion County for having sex with her son.
Lafave was in court in Ocala earlier this month for allegedly having sex with the student there in 2004. She's charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious battery on a child.

Lafave has been under house arrest since pleading guilty to similar charges in Hillsborough County last year. She's hoping for the same deal in Marion County.
The judge rejected the plea deal but is now reconsidering.
The boy’s mother says she hopes the judge accepts it. She says publicity has already damaged her family, and a trial would make things even worse.

Would we be even debating this if it was a male teacher and a 14-year old girl (or boy, for that matter)?

Let's debate it then.

If it was a guy I'd want him thrown in jail so fast his head would spin.

Something is different with this lady though. If she just wanted sex she could have went anywhere and gotten it.

She has a serious self esteem problem and is obviously tremendously immature. If the boy doesn't feel wronged...and the family doesn't want it to go to trial.......should the State of Florida be doing it??

I had an art teacher that had a rocking body like hers....but was a brunette.

I took art every year even though I can't even draw a stick man.

Why the double standard? Don't guys that sleep with 14-year olds generally have self-esteem problems, among others? What if the 14-year old girl doesn't feel wronged?

My two cents': It's irrelevant if the boy feels "wronged" or even if the boy enjoyed it, wished she'd come back so he could get some more. The fact remains is that she is a child molester. Once a child molester, always a child molester. There's no guaranteeing that her next victim will feel the same as this one. It's the criminal justice system's responsibility to prevent this from happening again to someone else.

That's part of the problem, that punishment cannot be predicated on the extent to which the victim feels "victimized" because it's so subjective, and punishment would be nearly impossible to administer fairly. If somebody steals a rich guy's car, the rich guy may not care, but you can't give the thief a pass on that basis.

Why the double standard?? I don't know....not a logical reason. Just can't get outraged about this.

25 year old guys that sleep with 14 year old girls are losers....and seeking to exploit them sexually. A loser guy can't just go walk into a bar...show some skin and go get laid.

25 year old girls that sleep with 14 year old boys are whackos. If it were just about sex....I think this lady could have walked into any bar in America, wearing a short skirt, and been in somebody's bed a half an hour later. I don't think it is about sex.....I think this lady wanted to be worshipped. And from the little I've heard about her....mentally she was like a pre teenager.

I guess the bottom line is if my sister got bagged by a 25 year old....I'd be over at the school with a chainsaw. But if it were reverse and my brother got with a teacher....I'd give him a High Five.

You won't find a 14 year old boy in America that would complain about being "wronged."

Absolutely... This is a serious crime and the double standard should not apply here.

But the family doesn't want to. Shouldn't that count for something??

The victim has no say.

Sounds like she is trying to plead guilty as she did to similar charges in Hillsborough County. If the judge allows that, there won't be a trial. If the judge rejects the plea, there should be a trial.

If that is what she says....then you've gotta believe it.
