Weekend Warrior Injury

After the Sun went down yesterday, and the tempature dropped below 100 degrees....I went down to the Greenbelt to play some flag football.

About 1/2 hour in....on my 5 Mississippi rush, the quarterback dodged my rush, and the rest of my body followed him, but my Left Cleat and Ankle stayed behind.

I thought I twisted it, I've done that a thousand times, and usually you can walk and stretch that off. This time though, it kept getting sorer. So, I played for like 20 more minutes, then I couldn't run much more, so like a wuss I got in my car and went home.

I got home and took my cleat off, and my foot and ankle were all swollen. I had a cankle. I kind of thought it was cool, because somehow, I've never sprained an ankle before. So I put ice on it for an hour...and that is where the fun began.

When I pulled the ice off....my entire foot was swollen out of control. Above and below my ankle, on the inside, was all green. And the inside ankle itself was a spectacular purple. I thought this was so cool....but my wife almost threw up. She wanted to go to urgent care, but I informed her I had already wussed out enough by not playing on it. I just told her I'd keep stretching it and all will work out.

When I woke up this morning, it swelled more, and now I can't really flex it or extend my foot. It's just too swollen. I couldn't get a dress shoe on, so I'm wearing Addidas. And it took my half an hour to get to my office. It's not really painful, just stiff.

So I am remembering back to a story my ol' Football Coach told me. He told me about the time, on the '75 ASU, Kush coached team, when he sprained his ankle:
It was swelling up, and he couldn't run on it anymore, so the trainer sliced the vein in his ankle to drain all the blood out. He said it worked great and he had the game of his life.

Ice isn't working, and it is too swollen right now to stretch out. I'm wondering if I should be looking into putting a little slice in my ankle.

No way. Some Dr's office will charge me $20, and bill my insurance $100.....just to tell me to put some ice on it.

Maybe I'm doing the wrong thing. Do you Ice a sprain?? Cuz it doesn't seem to work. Maybe I should throw a heating pad on there, that'll get blood moving.

I think you're being dumb not going to the doctor. Hurting yourself doesen't make you less of a wuss. I doubt anyone would call you that if you did the smart thing.

What are you, a woman? Rub some dirt on it and walk it off.

I saved $20-$50. That ain't no chump change. And especially with the current rate I am spending money. I don't know if you are paying attention or not.....but I'm making a ton of silly bets on here. I gotta save my dough to pay DDogg and CL off.

Okay, but when you're permanently disfigured/crippled, don't come whining to us....

Keep it elevated and dunk your foot in a bucket of ice water a couple times a day.

The last time I sprained my ankle that bad it took about 1.5 years until it was totally healed. To this day it still gets stiff and I have to crack it to regain mobility, the doctors said it wasn't broken but they said my life would have been better if it had because its a quicker recovery time
