Nutrition Basics

I think diet and nutrition are really interesting topics. After spending some time googling stuff, I learned the following;

1 gram of protein has 4 calories
1 gram of carbs has 4 calories
1 gram of fat has 9 calories

The average person decreasing (via diet or excercise) their caloric intake by 500 calories/day will lose 1 pound per week. Same of gaining weight.

For strength training, a good rule of thumb is for protein intake to be 1 gram for every pound of weight.

All that being said, my daily goals (tracked on fitday.com);

192 grams of protein (769 calories)
640 grams of carbs (2560 calories)
80 grams of fat (720 calories)

4048 calories per day. I have been around 3500 calories per day, with the fat being a bit higher and the carbs being a bit lower.

Nutrition is over half the battle for losing or gaining weight. Here is one of my favorite articles concerning nutrition. http://www.johnberardi.com/articles/...on/7habits.htm

abomb, I know you are trying to gain weight. I recommend that you check out this web site: http://www.johnberardi.com/

Go to the articles page and then the nutrition section. Check out "Massive Eating 1 and 2" and also "The Science of Nutrient Timing". Some is a bit technical but you will get the main point. This same nutritionist has a book entitled "Scrawny to Brawny" which targets ectomorphys like yourself who are trying to add some muscle mass.

I'm not trying to sell anything, I just enjoy this particular author and his philosophy. A good friend of mine has lost over 100 lbs using Berardi's "Don't Diet" kind of philosophy along with exercise and weight training.

Ok, today is my bday & I did so well. Protein shake for b-fast, glass of OJ and couple pieces of cheese mid morning, huge salad for lunch & was still full so just drank a bottle of wine for dinner (hey, it's my b-day dammit!). Then hubby knew I didn't want cake since I'm off refined sugar. So he made me a rice cake with all natural peanut butter & 100% fruit spread on it with a candle in the middle. Too cute. And yummy too.

Gonna go have dessert now

Hey, it's body & health so that dessert is good for me.

Berardi's theories play a large role in the diet theories of DC training. He's definitely a guy to read up on.
