I would highly recommend Yoga as well. There are a ton of different Yoga programs out there...and some are probably more intense than you can handle given your back problem. Look for Gentle Yoga programs or ones that are designed for back issues...I think they are called restorative programs. It really is a great workout and you really do feel a bit different after a workout.
Also, I would recommend taking a class vs the video route. Proper technique is easier to learn with the help of an instructor and this will minimize your risk of further injuring yourself....plus you are more likely to complete the entire workout if you do not have a stop button at your disposal.
Also, you might want to consider water aerobics as an initial workout. The water will allow you to get a workout in without putting too much stress on your body.
By just working out you should notice a difference immediately since the body will release its own pain killers....in the long run you will probably notice a difference due to the weight loss and strength and flexibility gains.
