Man Cancer Sucks....

I'm sure most of you have been touched in some way by Cancer. I watched my grandmother melt away 12 years ago from Cancer. And now, my sister-in-law is in her last days due to Cancer...
Just got back from CT where she is dying in a hospital bed in her home. She's 49 with an 11 year old son. Was diagnosed 7 years ago with Stage 4 Colon cancer. The doctors gave her less than a year to live. Since then, she's waged an amazing battle. The docs at Sloan Kettering in NYC are amazed. The truly amazing thing was that up until 7 months ago, you would have never known she was fighting this insidious disease. She never lost her hair, never lost weight and never looked sick.
She's an amazing lady from Holland. She's actually Dutch-Indonesian, and is/was drop dead gorgeous.
She's now down to 85 pounds and hasn't eaten a thing in over 3 weeks. She's a step or two from falling into a drug-induced coma - which would be a true blessing. The cancer is now throughout her body and bones, and the pain is staggering... She has been bed-ridden for more than a month... All of the idignities and de-humanizing attributes you can conjur up are all involved now... At least my grandmother slipped into coma and never felt a thing again.... My sister-in-law, though heavily sedated, is at times fully aware of what is happening, and will cry...
This is truly one of the most tragic things I have ever witnessed. I left late last night and flew back to PHX. Before I did I whispered in her ear, said good-bye and assured her that things will be fine. I hope the end comes soon...

Thanks D-Dogg... Just needed to vent. Life is so strange. People can just drop dead in a second, while others are forced to endure agony and pain that no person should ever have to face.
My sister-in-law was a pure gem of a person. She of all people should not have had to die this way, so young...
I pray the end comes very, very soon....

Wow, I have lost a mother-in-law to breast cancer. She was truly the nicest person that I have ever known. I know what you are going through.

Hang in there.

My closest aunt was diagnosed in August and passed away in October. She was 44 and her kids are 5, 10 & 18. It's so sad when there are young kids left behind. I truly hope your sister-in-law has a quick and peaceful passing soon. I'm very sorry to hear that your family is having to go through this right now, especially the 11 year old child.

Something we can all agree on!

Sorry to hear about how it's currently affecting your family.

I lost my grandpa to cancer when I was only 12.

My uncle died at 40 years old in 2001 and left behind a 12 year old son.

My grandpa died of cancer. Sucks. It was the medicine and not the cancer that killed him.

I say that when I get cancer....I just want my family to let it go. Everybody's gotta die.

Not necessarily. I had chemo and it didn't kill me and I certainly was too young to go anyway. Same with MadCardDisease.

But even if you're very old and fragile, they at least have to give it a shot.

No way. Another friend at work died from Chemo. It's just my preference and I won't put it in my body.

NEZ - up until recently, I felt the same way. However, via my sister-in-law, I have learned a great deal about the recent and on-going advancements being made in chemotherapy. Suffice to say while it remains a nasty pollutant to your body, it's not nearly as destructive as it used to be. They have developed a number of therapies that can be targeted based upon the form of cancer, and that are more easily tollerated by the body versus prior treatments.
It's still a very nasty method of treating an illness, but the side effects are being lessened on a steady basis. As I mentioned above, my sister-in-law never once showed any side effects at all during her entire battle. And for the last 3-4 years, she was often taking treatments that had not yet been approved b the FDA! Sloan-Kettering was essentially using her as a Guinea Pig. Since she was so far advanced in her illness, she always qualified for these trials, and very often, the experimental chemo was effective, and produced very little if any side effects...

All that said, if I ever get anywhere close to the stage where she is now, please call Dr. K and hook me up!!! I never, ever want to waste away as she is now...
