Looking For Some Advice

Hello to all. I have never posted here, but I do frequent the Cardinal and PR forums.

Last week a friend of my better half's called and asked if I would watch her 3yr old daughter. I have a 3yr old son and told her I didn't mind at all. My wife, Kelly, had to work the past two two days, so I had the both of them as well as my 8month old daughter.

Anyway, this poor little girl is absurdly overfed. I can honestly say that she eats like no one I have ever seen outside of eating competitions. At 2yrs old, Kelly said the poor girl weighed in at 52lbs. My son is a big kid and was only 40lb. Average is 30-38. Yesterday I let her eat what she wanted, as was her mother's request. From 8am - 5pm yesterday she consumed:
  • 1 bowl of oatmeal
  • 1 bowl of cereal
  • 2 "Go-Gurts" (kids' yogurt snack)
  • 1 adult dannon yogurt
  • 4 slices of cheese
  • 8" personal pizza (no crust)
  • 2 bananas
  • 1 apple
  • 1 fruit cup
(her mother sent a grocery bag full of cheetos, fritos, and vienna sausage things, but I just couldn't give that to the kid in good conscience)

All day she was begging for food, but after a while I just had to say no. Today when I wouldn't let her have 4 breakfasts, she stole some of my infants baby food and was scarfing it down like a dog in my bathroom when I found her. When I gave her the apple I had to show her how to eat it because she had no clue what it was. She just takes food and literally shoves it down her throat ASAP. Much like a dog in all honesty.

You want to get irrated wih the child, as she harrasses you for food all day, but obviously you cant blame her for what she has been taught. My question though is how, if at all, should I approach her mother today. She is ruining this poor child's life before she has really begun to live it and it breaks my heart every time I look at her.

That's borderline neglect. If they are truly your friends, I'd have a talk with the parents.

Bring up what she had to eat for a ice breaker.

They aren't my friends at all. Truthfully, I could care less about their feelings. I just dont want to come off so overly condescending that they ignore what I am saying.

People get reported to social services or CPS for not feeding their kids, but I really dont see what this woman is doing as much worse. Aside from the health risks, today's society is really stacked against an obese girl trying to be successfull. As politically incorrect as this may sound, it's the truth IMO.

Thanks for the response btw.

I'm a bit shocked that what she ate was mostly healthy foods. Good for you to hold back that horrid stuff the mom sent over.

Honestly, if she always ate the way you wrote it in the list (not the scarfing of food and such, though) that isn't bad. It's too much food, but it's all mostly healthy other than the GoGurts, and too much cheese. So she eats too much, which is the first problem. But the other problem is that at home those apples and bananas and such turn into a bag of cheetos and those vienna sausage things...and then she goes from maybe overweight to out of control overweight.

Kudos to you for forcing some healthy food her direction.

Yeah, Donald said what I was thinking. At least she was scarfing down some healthy foods. Nice job of switching over. Maybe she's just going thru a growing stage. Sometimes it seems like my kids aren't eating enough and sometimes I can't keep them full.

The important thing is that they are eating the right foods.

As far as dealing with the mother, I don't know. I doubt anything you say to her will really matter. You don't care about her feelings, so I doubt that you guys are close enough that she would care about your opinion.

Yeah, but the problem is that the kid already looks like "Chewy" from "Chelsie Lately". She can hardly move she is so damn big. You should see the poor child try to fight her way up a set of stairs.

Yeah, you're probably right.

Just saw this...you should say something; even if it does no good whatsoever. It's better than saying nothing. You never know; it may have an impact.
