Jogging/Running

Anybody ever get involved in the charity races or any kind of race?

I'm running my first race on the 25th. A 5K.

I run 2.5 miles every other day so I hope I can finish this one.

My goal is to run the 5K in less than 30 minutes.

I don't what a good time is, but pros and some other times I've seen are near half what I can do.

If you run 2.5 miles everyday a 3.1 mile run should not be difficult for you.

To make it in 30 minutes, you will have to run slightly less than 10 minutes per mile (around 9:50) should get you there.

When I was running serioulsy (in college) I could complete a 5k in about 15:45, but you should not be basing you time on experienced runners.

I have not trained in over 3 years and gained about 30lbs, but I can still run a 5k in around 20 minutes.

Just run the best time that you can, and BTW, the average human runs 1 mile in about 12 minutes.

When I play rock, paper, scissors, I keep a glass of water in my hand and when my opponent throws down I throw the water in his face and say "Water". Beats all three, scissors can't cut-it, paper dissolves and the rock sinks. Plus it usually surprises the hell out of them.

Thanks.

That's some pretty good time. I started running in October.

My goal at first was to run 1 1/2 miles in less than 11 minutes. Which I can do.

Now I'm working my way up to 5K in under 30 and hopefully down to about 25 minutes.

I run 2.5 miles right now in about 26 minutes. And that's running with a dog on a leash. Which slows me down a little bit.

At first I didn't care too much for it. But after about a month I really began to enjoy it. It's relaxing and almost like a form of meditation.

You will be able to finish no problem. Going from 2.5 to 3.1 miles will not be too much of a challenge with the amount of running you currently do. Ideally, you should add 10% to your distance per week to build endurance and minmize the pain/injury risk.

Actually, the hardest part of running is the first 25 minutes. Once you get past the first 20-25 minutes your body starts burning fuel very efficiently and you enter a zone where it becomes much easier to run (assuming you build up gradually to distances and take some energy gels/Clif shot blocks every hour or so). You could easily do a 10K with just a little training.

Don't worry about your time...just finishing is usually rewarding enough. For a 5K...a recreational runner will do about 8-11 minute miles and finish in the 25-35 minute range.

I ran a "practice 5K" on Sunday in preparation.

I ran it in less than 24 minutes.

Towards the end I really did feel pretty good and felt like I could've gone further.

Maybe the next time I'll just go as far as I can and see what happens. My dog doesn't seem to have any problems with it.

I recently subscribed to Runner's World magazine and have been thinking about following one of their training programs to go from 5K to 10K to half marathon just to see what I can do.

I started running myself, but had a foot injury that sidelined me. I am ready to start again. Wanted to do a 5K before the second anniversary of Pat Tillman's death, but am unsure now if I will be in shape for it.

Thanks folks.

Jersey there is nothing worse than trying to get started after being injured or sick. Good luck at getting things going again.

Now the charity I ran for is talking 10K in May. I'm thinking of pushing my running and going for a 45 minute 10K. Or a little over 7 minutes per mile.

I think if I changed my diet a little and lost a few pounds it would probably help me out a little.

"You can do it!"

I'm healed now and ready to get back on track. This weekend is supposed to be nice in Jersey so I think outside running will do me good!
