Gout

Anyone ever had it? I woke up with terrible pain in my big toe and after searching the internet, I believe this is what I have. I'm guessing I consume too much protein/beer and not enough water. Is this something I should see a doctor for or will it go away in a couple days? Hurts every step but I don't mind pain.

If you have gout you should see a doctor.

What the F. The pain is completely gone today. Maybe I hit my toe while letting the dog out during the night.

If this becomes a reoccurring thing you should see a doctor. I had the same thing and just assumed it was turf toe from all my years of athletics but it was gout and they discovered that my kidneys were starting to fail! Go check it out to be sure.

Gout can come and go -- it has to do with uric acid, and if you ate a lot of shellfish, drank a lot of beer, etc., you could have had a quick flash. My ex had those kinds of things for a couple years (he knew it was gout because his brother'd had it). There is medical evidence to back up the old folk remedy of cherries. Tart (pie-type) cherries are best, but next time it happens, eat a bag of dried montmorency cherries, or mix a little sweetener in a can of unsweetened pie cherries. Unless you have it really bad, it will help dissolve and flush out the uric acid crystals.

And that's true about getting it checked out -- it can also be a very early indicator of risk for 'Metabolic Syndrome' which precedes diabetes and cadiovascular disease, as well as harming kidneys.

I did read about the cherry remedy and ate some the day I had it. Just figured it would last more than one day. No one in my family has ever had gout, so I appreciate the info. I now have a doctor appointment on my to do list.
