Fish/Flaxseed oils?

First off, this is a great forum. I have yet to read everything, but I will eventually. Does anyone use fish and flaxseed oils? If so, what brands and types?

Thanks.

I use flaxseed oil (Sundown brand) that I get at the local supermarket. Flaxseed oil isn't a major "buy" i.e. it's not something that you need to get at GNC or Bodybuilders.com.

I get 120 capsules and I think it runs around 7 bucks.

This, by the way, is why I thought it ludricrous that Barry "I thought I was taking Flaxseed oil" Bonds was thinking he was gonna pull off that lie with the press. First, Flaxseed oil, although it's name implies otherwise isn't topical. So, his excuse that he thought "the Cream" was flaxseed is insane. Flaxseed is a pill. Also, I don't think (actually, I know) that he knows the difference and wasn't paying a couple hundred dollars to Balco for a bottle of flaxseed that you can get for under 10 bucks at any grocery store.

But I digress. I've just been wanting to get that off my chest for awhile.

Me too. Then sprinkle the powder on my cereal (Basic 4 - low in sugar) or in a protien shake. Can't even taste it.

I've taken fish oil for more than two years now on the advice of my doctor to get my "good cholesterol" levels up. I took two tabs a day for a year, now I take one a day and my levels are good.

Here's a comparison of the two:

What is the difference between fish oil and flaxseed oil?

Both fish and flax are good sources of omega-3's, and for people who will not consume fish for any reason, flax will do. Flaxseed oil is also less expensive, which can be an important consideration as well. The main difference is that flaxseed oil contains only alpha- linoleic acid (ALA), which is the parent compound from which other omega-3 fatty acids are derived. This leaves it to your body to do the conversion to the other forms it needs, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The problem is that the conversion is not always that efficient, and the body often uses the ALA for extra energy, leaving less for conversion to the other types. Fish oil, on the other hand, contains the other forms and delivers them directly to your body with no conversion necessary. Whatever form you decide to take, nutritionists recommend to back it up with an extra 400 IU of vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols) to prevent the fatty acids from breaking down too rapidly in your body.

Flaxseed oil does come in oil form much like olive oil and is better quality than pill form (no fillers etc) but some can not stand the taste of the oil form of flaxseed oil. I get mine at any supplement store. Organic is better than non-organic. Flaxseed oil is very sensative to light and temperature. It must be refrigerated after opening and be stored in a dark bottle - it tastes really bad if spoiliage results from improper storage.

Fish oil is most widely available in pill form - the smell of the oil form would not be pleasant - some pills have a fishy oder and taste. I just get generic brand from Costco - I have read nutritionists' opinions that generic is just as good as name brand.

AJ Card fan did a nice job of explainng the benefits of both oils. I enjoy flaxseed oil poured over a spinach and chicken salad. Also can be mixed into a protein shake to hide the tase for those who do not like the taste. Ground flaxseeds are also a nice alternative and can be added to protein shakes or oatmeal, etc. It has a nice nutty flavor and along with the exceptional fatty acid profile has a nice amount of fiber.

Bought some Flax Oil and Fish oil supplements yesterday. Couldn't even taste them in my protein shake.
