Calorie Burning

How many calories a day would the average person burn if they didn't do anything in the way of exersize? In other words, what's the baseline burn rate?

Well I was way off!!

How to Make Your Body Burn More Calories
You can make weight loss quicker and easier by increasing your metabolic rate and burning more calories – here’s how:

Metabolic Rate is the rate at which the body burns up calories. A body that consumes 2500 calories a day, and burns 2500 calories a day will stay at the same weight. A body consuming 2500 calories daily but burning only 2000 will gain weight at the rate of about 1lb a week.

This explains why that ‘lucky’ person across the table from you doesn’t get fat from all that junk food.

You can do quite a lot to speed up your metabolism – the secret of burning calories lies in knowing what determines your metabolic rate and what you can do to influence it.

This is a quote from this page: http://health.discovery.com/tools/ca...sal/basal.html

You expend energy no matter what you're doing, even when sleeping. Thus your Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day - a tempting idea for some. If you've noticed that every year, it becomes harder to eat whatever you want and stay slim, you've also learned that your Basal Metabolic Rate decreases as you age. Likewise, depriving yourself of food in hopes of losing weight also decreases your BMR, a foil to your intentions. However, a regular routine of cardiovascular exercise can increase your BMR, improving your health and fitness when your body's ability to burn energy gradually slows down.

There is also a calculator. I tried a couple different on-line calculators (Google "BSR") and they were within 20 calories of one another. However, neither factored in my leam body mass as my fat mass does not need energy to maintain it's fatness.

If you know your body fat % you could calculate the weight variance and get a better reading.

Good post.

The BMR calculations are usually thrown off in the case of teens as well.

LBM will throw it way off as well.

Open a profile on fitday.com for free.

It will tell you approximately how many calories you burn at a basal rate (mine is 1800 at 5'8, 175 lbs) and how many with your lifestyle activity.

if you track exercise and food consumption on that site, you can really get a handle on what your deficit or overage is on calories per day/week/month/year.

I really only lose weight when tracking these things closely, so Fitday is great for me. Tracking my food and exercise daily for the last three and a half weeks and I've dropped 8 lbs, with 10 more to go on my way to 165. Last year I was getting very heavy, around 195 and I used fitday to drop to 180. Diet management and exercise are all you need to lose weight, no fancy diets or the like.

I found that other people's exercises don't really work for me. I can literally run every single day and still gain weight. However, weight lifting really drops the weight off me. Usually people are the opposite of that. Cardio is my preferred excercise, but I need weights to really get my metabolism going.

I guess I was wondering if you wanted him to post to try his work outs?
