SAFC fans delighted Keegan's back at Newcastle
Kevin Clark
Sunderland Echo

Sunderland fans today had their say on the return of Kevin Keegan to St James's Park – and they could not be happier.

Wearsiders said they are over the moon today after Newcastle reappointed their former boss, but not for the same reasons as their Tyneside rivals.

Martyn McFadden, editor of Sunderland fanzine A Love Supreme, said: "From a Sunderland fan's perspective, I'm delighted with the appointment.

"Newcastle have not won anything for 52 years. They wanted a manager who could win them trophies. I don't think Keegan has won anything in his managerial history.

"At the end, he did not achieve anything except to spend a lot of money."

Martyn reckons the appointment is a bid by owner Mike Ashley to appease the fans after the billionaire failed in his bid to persuade Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp to move north.

"I think it will keep the fans of Newcastle happy for a week," he said.
"In the past they have gone for people who are good managers, but they still have not done very well at Newcastle.

"I thought they would go for somebody who had achieved something, maybe a foreign manager."

Superfan Gary "Sunderland AFC" Lamb, from Seaham, described the Magpies' hotseat as "a poison chalice" and predicted Keegan would not be around for long.

"I think they have just gone for what the fans want," he said. "I'm not sure he is going to bring them success."

Black Cats legend Jimmy Montgomery was surprised by the appointment, but willing to give Keegan the benefit of the doubt.

Keegan, a former England boss, has been out of football for several years, but Jimmy reckoned comparisons with Sunderland's disastrous appointment of Howard Wilkinson are wide of the mark.

"I think the charisma of Keegan is a little bit more effective than Howard's, to say the least," he said.

"It will be interesting to see who Keegan gets in and whether he still has all that enthusiasm he had when he first came.

"The fans will love it, that is what they wanted, but we will just have to wait and see.

"They always say 'Never go back,' but I think time will tell."

Keegan's return is expected to boost NUFC's finances.

Vinay Bedi, of stockbrokers Brewin Dolphin, said: "There are not many managers, except possibly Jose Mourinho, who would have the same effect as the return of Keegan.

"I would imagine Newcastle will become a far more attractive proposition for the TV cameras, especially if they play the kind of football the last time he was here."

Wow, I didn't realize Sunderland fans were so stupid Keegan did win in his managerial history--a lot. First, he took a team out of the Premiership, and on their way to being relegated down another step, and brought them back to the Premiership. That was his first year as a Magpie. His second year and first year in the Premiership, they finished third. After finishing sixth his third year, the Toon almost won the Premiership title. Yes, the collapse happened and Man U. won it, and Keegs subsequently resigned. Still and all, hardly a manager to laugh at, especially given how abysmal their own team is. Those in glass houses and whatnot.

As a Newcastle fan, I'm excited. Yeah, the guy ran when the going got tough (finishing in 2nd is tough, I guess), but he also had the most successful stint as manager in a long, long time. Without him, we would probably be back in the Championship. If his high-flying style can get us back near the top, with a chance at the title, I'm all for it.

Sorry, I just had to answer the idiotic ramblings of Sunderland fans who *supposedly* know football. I know you guys on here are way more informed, but the above idiots sounded like retarded children.

its the feeling amongst most sunderland supports to be fair (and one or too Newcastle fans - although not too many) and look at the national press it seems most fans of other clubs seem to see it as a backwards step too.

If he does what he did last time he was mamanger i will be chuffed to bits. ie win nothing, spend millions, walk out. In the process he wound up the teams youth development and withdrew the reserve team from the northern league. When he left your club not only did he win nothing he set is about 10 back in terms of youth development. This at a time when most clubs (and yes i include sunderland in this) were spending millions on youth academies up and down the country. I admit that i lost a lot of nights sleep whe you here was cracking under the pressure and losing that 13 point lead, and losing cup finals, semi finals and charity sheild games but in the end he won nothing and ripped a massive part of the club out too. Not all his own fault - not chairman in the world would have let this happen but Jon Hall, who was so far up Keegan back door it beggers beleif. Even hated chairman at newcastle like McKeag saw this was a massive mistake.

But the fans were happy and to your credit your could attract the money for players which made the impact less drastic.

One thing is has done is lift the city (which i live and work) spirits, this cant be a bad thing. Again i like to see you lot lose week in week out but i like the fact the its put a smile on freinds (and black sheep family -brother) faces.

and Keegan has made his first signing too ...... Shaun Wright-Phillips!

Hey, all I'm saying is that we enjoyed our greatest success under Keegan. He has proven, without a doubt, that he can make the Magpies a title contender. This time around, it isn't as drastic a rebuilding process, as he has some world-class players already in place. As long as he can handle the pressure this time, and not mortgage the team's future, this should be a great move. I cannot believe he didn't learn a thing from the mistakes he made before. I'm thrilled with the move, and I'm ready for us to finish better this year than we would have otherwise.

Black Cats' Wallace out for the season

Sunderland winger Ross Wallace is out for the season after damaging knee ligaments in training.
Manager Roy Keane confirmed that the 22-year-old will miss the rest of the campaign as his injury problems continue to mount.
The former Celtic player was one of the Irishman's first signings after being appointed in August 2006 and has made a major impact at the Stadium of Light.

You are not wrong there - a good finsh this year (which i agree he will bring) can only be good for you. who knows if you sneak a Uafa cup spot with a 7/8th finish then its going to help a hell of a lot towards attracting even better players for next season.

Its also question of how you measure success i suppose - for Newcastle it made the club what it is now - no doubt about it and much as he did as a player. Its much the same way Reid took sunderland forward with the new stadium and a few seasons finishing in the top 7 of the lge. Which given the length of time sinc we are you won something (25 years in our case and 53 in yours) is not too bad.

If it was a Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal it would have been a shocking spell as manager. Even team like Villa Everton Spurs have better recent records then Newcastle would not be too thrilled.

End of the day its long time since you or us were considered a top team so we have to take what we can get. Look back over time and we have won the league some 6 times and you guys maybe 4 or 5 but thats all in the passed (a bit like keegan).

cant say i want Newcastle to win EVER, but i am pleased its put a smile on your face anyway mate

oh and your game is sky tmrw by the way 5.15 kick off here (so is thats about 10.15 there?!?) have you checked the listings as it might be shown over there ???

Eh, this doesn't worry me that much. Wallace was likely going to be loaned or sold this month anyway.

Anyone know anything about the new signing from Man U?

Anyone catch the weekend's match between Empoli and Juve? Juve had to win by two, won 5-3. Crazy.

Man, I didn't realize you guys had Richardson. He was injured, and when he came back he was in form. Now he's injured again. Sorry to hear.

Sunderland to lose Richardson for three weeks

Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson is set to be out for three weeks with a hamstring injury.

The former Manchester United man suffered the injury in training and missed the defeat to Tottenham on Saturday. It is a new blow for the 23-year-old, who scored three goals in five games following his return from a back injury in December.

Black Cats boss Roy Keane told the club's official website: 'Kieran will be out for about three weeks, he has damaged his hamstring but that's life and you have to get on with the challenge.'

thought have just signed Bardsley from Man Utd for 2 mil to play at rightback and also 2 mil on this bloody Swedish striker who has 2 goals in 13 games

these could be a long couple pf months ahead.

Yep, especially in make-or-break time as far as relegation. I hope you guys stay up. You've been bouncing up and down, but it would be nice if you could stay up, get some more talent, and we could have a real rivalry.

Well, I know the teams hate each other and all, but it's kind of like how the Cards-Cowboys rivalry was for a long time. Sure, we hated the Cowboys, but couldn't do a darn thing against them. Sure, you may hate us, and we may not be that good, but you guys aren't on our level yet. Like I said, I hope you do make it to our level...that would be awesome.
