I said that Venus or Serina could beat most men not any of the women, the WIlliams sisters serves are pretty close to the mens, they are breaking speed records all the time, I said womens could compete with the US mens soccer team, and I was only saing that because our mens team sucks so much. When I say soccer is more popular, I say meaning only in the US.
IF they can how come they have consistently declined offers to play against men? Not that any man would take them up, but I know for a fact that they have both been approached several times with offers of a battle of the sexes match and refused. Serena has even said she likes to practice against men to get better.
Serena is currently ranked 7th and Venus 9th (injuries for both) so to suggest they could beat MOST men when they're not even the top women currently is far fetched. Lindsay Davenport is the top ranked woman right now anybody think she can handle say Andy Roddick?
Just for kicks I looked it up, Venus holds the official womens' record at 127 MPH on her service. Apparently Big Bill Tilden was clocked at 163 MPH once, in 1931 with a wooden racket. Not sure I believe that, the fastest "modern" measured serve was Andy Roddick at 154 MPH. Roddick consistently hits 140, Williams consistenly hits 115 and she's the biggest server in women's tennis most of the top players tap out between 100 and 105.
That's why I prefer to watch women's tennis, the serves don't end the point because they're not SO fast that the returner has no chance.
I'll take Serena against Sharapova anyday over a mens match but I don't believe for a minute Serena(or Sharapova) could beat most professional men. Me and you yes, pros, no way.

If the women tennis players are so tough, why do they only play best-of-3 in most matches instead of best-of-5 like the men?
Basically: If the women in any sport want to compete versus the men - they should try playing the same game first. Instead of women adapting to the men's game, they have had their sports altered on the basis that they're women.

Sorry Bankybruce but the Williams' couldn't be the top 50 men and the women soccer team wouldn't come close to beating the men's soccer team...

Again, I said the scoccer team could compete with them, I did not say they could beat them and again I say that because our US team is really bad, and you can say what you want about tennis, but there are only about 10 or so good mens players right now, after that the talent level drops off badly and IMO I know that the Willaims sister could take any of the drop off players and could play against the top 10, maybe not beat them, some of you may be right there, but they could compete.

What do you define compete as? I think the Women's soccer team and the Williams' sisters would get beat badly. and I bet they would lose outside of the top 10 too...
If that is true why is womens tennis and soccer more popular then mens tennis and soccer. I bet Venus and Serina could beat most of the men on the tour and I bet our womens US soccer team to compete with our mens.
i don't think venus and serena could beat MOST of the men on tour. they could certainly beat some of them.
there is no way our women's us soccer team could complete with our mens. you just aren't recognizing the incredible disparity in physical disparities between men and women.

Women beating or not beating men in sports is irrelevant.
It's all about whether watching a person do something is interesting or not.
Women's volleyball (not the beach kind) is way cool.
Women's gymnastics, ice skating, and swimming are great.
Women's soccer is fabulous.
Women's pro basketball is horribly boring. Don't know why. It just is. I don't care for women's college bball either. It's just not entertaining.

Skkorp, this nails it as I see it too. I have three daughters and no sons. And, the shop is all closed, so that's it, unless we adopt. So, I made an effort to gain some appreciation of women's sports so I could encourage my daughters if they were inclined in that direction. Women's basketball is only exceeded by softball in being unwatchable. All the other sports you mentioned can be entertaining.
