Will the next president get a fair shake?

Personally, I doubt it.

If it's a Republican, he, or she, will have all the concerns with the Bush administration heaped on them.

If it's a Democrat, the Republicans will go after him/her with great vengeance and furious anger.

The way I see it, the next President is in a no-win situation for a couple of years at least.

Unless the GOP loses big time.

In that case they may purge themselves of the loony right wingers. In that case they may build a base of moderate voters that want to come back and vote Republican next time. Myself included.

This isn't going to happen while the religious right controls the primary process. If you doubt it look and McCain's attempts to appease them. For now there are religious right wing litmus tests most GOP candidates must pass to get past the primaries.

So, political extremism is a Republican only problem?

No president gets a fair shake. They are immediately targets for the opposition party, special interest agendas, and foreign power agendas. They are demonized or praised regardless of their actions because of whose side they are perceived to be on.

Unless the DNC loses big time.

In that case they may purge themselves of the loony left wingers. In that case they may build a base of moderate voters that want to come back and vote Democrat next time. Myself included.

This isn't going to happen while the moveon.org and daily Kos seek to control the primary process. If you doubt it look and Clinton's attempts to appease them. For now there are moveon.org/daily kos left wing litmus tests most democrat candidates must pass to get past the primaries.

No but religious motivated political extremism is mostly a republican issue right now.

And as somebody [generalizing] who would like the chance vote for a business orientated GOP candidate who gives a damn about the environment. I for one will be very happy the day that that the GOP finally recovers control from the Religious activists.

However that isn't going to happen without an massive election loss first.

At least with the Democrats the loony fringe is secular so you can argue with them.

With the GOP the loony fringe know the answers, they come from their own interpretation of the Bible. hence there is no possibility of compromise as we have seen on this board over and over again.

When religion controls your politics, there is no middle ground.

the next president will be Demo, and they will just be a fill gap till the next election. they'll spend most of their term fixing the messes we are in now and probably wont find themselves in a re-electable position unless they do an AMAZING job getting us back on track.

Dude I'm really starting to think that you check under your bed and in your closet for revival preachers before you go to bed at night.

I don't think you can argue with ANY fringe element - all extremists tend to react emotionally rather than logically. Both left and right apply here.

I'd like to see a 3 party system - one far left, one far right, and a large middle party that takes into account the 60% of us in the middle.

Nope the loony in the White House is enough for me to worry about.

And you don't think that having the right conservative Chrsitian credentials is important for primaries,. Please explain why a previously [mostly] secular McCain is coming over all Christian conservative now ?

I can't believe you are naive enough not to know this.

But your reaction is typically. If somebody starts to decry the activist fringe then many here start dumping on them and accusing us of lumping all Christians together.

Note for your reading. I said "Loony Fringe", this only applies to you if you include yourself in the Loony fringe group
