Why do we give billions of dollars to Israel?

I know Israel is close with the US but I don't know why we give them all this money. Peace will never happen between the Palestinians and the Israelis, both sides will keep killing each other and I don't believe we need to support that kind of action. I might be in the minority here but that money could be spent here in the US and help Americans who need it.

There are a few reasons why we support the state of Israel. In no particular order:

1. The right of Israel to exist. As you may or may not know, Israel was created in 1948 after the Holocaust so the world could be sure that the Jews would have a country of their own and not become victims again to any plan of extermination by another state or political movement.

2. Almost as soon as it was created, Israel came under attack by Arabs who wanted Israel destroyed. Without support from the West the fledgling country might not have survived. Now because of mainly U.S. technology, Israel is the dominant military power in the Middle East.

3. The Jewish lobby in this country is very strong and they keep the pressure on our politicians not to cut any support that the United States sends to Israel.

4. And this is probably the most important reason, Israel has been our close ally in a region where we have traditionally not had many. The U.S. feels that we need a presence in the Middle East because of the oil reserves there. We wouldn't turn our backs on our ally in such a strategically important region of the world because it wouldn't be in our own interest to do so.

I find it ironic that there are more jews in New York City than there are in Israel. Like Renz said, they had a very strong lobby with our Government.

I'm strongly Pro-Palestinean.

I believe that they have been mistreated by Israel and the west in general. Israel is in violation of many UN resolutions in their treatment of the Palestinean people, and justice is not served.

I want to see Bush push for a recognized Palestinean state, but I do realize that there are too many factions of Arabs (like Hamas) that want nothing short of the destruction of Israel and Dar-al Islam (a united Arab nonsecular government).

Personally, I'm getting to the point where we should just nuke the whole region.

However, I see a solution. Bush should go to the UN say that the U.S. is suspending any and all payments to Israel or any Arab country or group. It will remain in effect until there are two peacefully co-existing countries. He should get all the other countries to do the same.

Neither side will take a step toward peace until they have to. Right now, no one has to and pretty much no one wants to. Take away all their suffisions of cash and they'll move to the table quickly enough.

There is a major problem with this. Israel has at last estimate 350-450 nukes thanks to our French friends for "rewarding" Israel with nuke technology for their help in the 60s. We can't simply allow Israel to die as it will mean every hostile country within several thousand miles will have its major city residents bathed in a lovely nuclear glow. As appealing as that might be sometimes its just simply not a great solution for the short run. Unfortunately, I have no idea what will ever solve that particular situation without the annihilation of one side.

So are you saying that letting Israel die IS good for the long run? Or were you just being sarcastic?

Actually I was being cynical in that nuking the entire mid-east and a good portion of North Africa would be a good thing for the long run. Radiation, Loss of innocent lives and the temporary decrease in the supply of oil as the reasons why it wouldn't be good in the short run.

You are either the funniest or stupidest person on this board in a while. I know it's hard to convey sarcasm in a couple of written sentences....
