GREENBELT, Maryland (AP) -- Two groups filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday to block a health curriculum that would allow discussions of homosexuality with eighth graders, and a video to be shown to sophomores demonstrating how to use a condom.
Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum and the Virginia-based Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays want to prevent Montgomery County from starting the program in six schools later this week. A hearing has been set for Thursday.
The new program, approved by the county board of education in November, would be used in all schools next year.
"In general, parents have been supportive of the curriculum," said spokesman Brian Edwards.
Parents must sign permission forms for their children to take part in the health curriculum and parents can sit in on the sessions. Families also can choose alternatives that include abstinence-only programs.
County educators say the changes were needed to teach students about the dangers of unprotected sex. However, those suing argue the county does not do enough to stress abstinence or allow people the groups describe as formerly gay to present their views.

Since parents have to approve their children taking part, what's the big deal?
Personally, I don't believe this type of "education" belongs in the classroom. Especially not to 8th graders or high-schoolers.
I think it absolutely belongs in the classroom. They're not telling kids to go out and have sex so there's no conflict with your morals. High schoolers (and yes, even middle schoolers) are going to have sex. That's a fact and nothing is going to change it. Schools DO teach that abstinence is the best policy but if kids are going to have sex they should know the facts and how to protect themselves. They need an open forum where they can learn about STDs, pregnancy, contraception and so forth from people who have studied the facts instead of parents who don't always know everything. It's ridiculous to say they shouldn't be taught about that in school just because you don't think anyone that young should be having sex or that premarital sex in general is wrong. Ignoring a problem won't make it go away.

You'll be missed.
You don't consider learning about human sexuality to be "education"? It's a difficult topic for some.
I don't believe it needs to be in our schools (until college). It's a topic that should be discussed between a parent/child at home or maybe presented by a social program at a public library/Boys and Girls Club/YMCA/free public health event, etc.

How many horny 16 year olds are going to show up to that?
"Hey guys, I'm going to the library to learn about sex!"

Fact: Abstinence only education simply doesn't work (statically proven).
Fact: Ignorance (in this case, of homosexuality) breeds contempt.
Fact: Parents have to ok their kids going to such classes.
Jeezie Peezie!!! What's the beef?

I was thinking younger kids than that. Basic discussion, etc.
Personally, I don't think that would work either.
Overall just frustrated that it's even a topic. This should be an issue between a parent/child not a teacher/student.
I guess the public school system has replaced parenting.
Supplements parenting..... And then, of course, there's the great debate of exclusivity (which we'll never solve here....) between school and parenting.

Hey let em learn like we did. From older guys telling you you grow hair on your palms if you masturbate and a hodge podge of sexual "facts" from your peers (example: If you put lemon juice on a girls vagina and it burns, that means she has an STD). Those little comic books were neat also and gave a really accurate representation of how sex should be performed (sodomy, rape, violence, etc.).
Some parents are responsible and give their kids the information when they ask for it, but the majority shy away from the subject. These kids questions need to be answered by responsible, well informed adults who are without bias in regards to sexual matters. If parents want their kids to abstain from sex, teach them at home or in church, but don't take this opportunity away from the other parents who don't want this responsibility. As long as this is an elective course, it should be allowed.

Since the schools already teach evolution can we expect an explanation of how homosexuality fits into the evolutionary process?
If we consider the evolutionary path of our species we will quickly realize that homosexuality is not normal in the sense of human reproduction. Our genes have evolved to require the uniting of a male sperm with a female ovum (egg) to bring new human life into the world. Even if one takes away the physical act of sexual reproduction (E.g. IVF), one is still bringing together the same basic units (sperm/egg). Humans cannot reproduce using only male sperm or only female ovum. Thus in this sense homosexuality is not normal. According to the 'laws of evolution' homosexuals cannot procreate (unless they use artificial insemination) and thus will not survive their generation (have children). So, according to evolutionary principles homosexuality is deviant behavior that will be removed from the human gene pool by the process of natural selection.
Everyone cool with that lesson plan?
