In 2000 McCain was a different person, he asked tough questions and seemed to not follow the status quo of a Republican. In the end he got the royal screw job from the GOP.....
Now he seems like he's trying to prove that he's a true republican.... he's speaking Pro-War, he's now defending Bush and just seems to have lost his charisma and charm that made him a serious contender in '00.
It's like he's trying to make good with the GOP before he rides off into the sunset. He has no shot at the nomination, he doesn't have nearly the financial funds the other candidates do....... What is he doing?

I wouldn't go as far as saying "no shot". Certainly a good run in liberal New Hampshire would drive his coffers up significantly. Kerry 04 is proof of that.
IMO McCain is just one of those politicians that speaks what he believes is the best thing for the country and that can hurt you sometimes in the world of liars, I mean politics.... I am sure McCain understands all the withdrawl timelines are pure rhetoric and not realistic. But on the other hand he is at the mercy of popular opinion and Iraq ain't cool right now with most Amercians. It's the dominating issue and everyone really focuses on Iraq right now, I am sure if there were other issues at the forefront he would be the same old John McCain.
Also keep in mind Guliani and Rommney have pretty much had the luxury of being out of the spotlight (theirs will come soon believe me).
McCain used to speak his mind regardless, but he has revised dramatically on a number of issues in order to appeal to the traditional (read: Religious) GOP. The result was that his one true selling point to a lot of independents -- integrity -- went the way of his socially moderate appeal to a lot of Republicans-- down the crapper. Plus there's the FDDILWO factor.

In 2000 McCain was eight years ahead of his time. But now he's known as the guy for flip-flopping to get a political advantage to win the GOP.

IMO, McCain is true to only one: Himself. You are not going to win a primary or general with statments such as : "I don't agree with the American people" (Iraq) and "I make mistatements all the time and I am sure I will again" (Security in Iraq). Yeah, he's a real winner this one.
Psssst: The Republicans have no one for the2008 presidential election. It's already over. Kinda like the Dole v. Clinton debacle. Insert Romney here.

Yeah because why should a guy who was a POW have any right to say what he feels about this country?
I mean he was only tortured(and not sleep deprivation like most of you whine about in Gitmo, but real broken bones and burns) and interegated for years with out breaking and giving up info that might harm another American.
But why should a guy like that have the political freedom to be honest about what he feels is good for the country?
Hillary in 08' because Americans prefer liars.

Everybody has the right to say whatever they want about this country. McCain's problem is that he was tortured and it obviously has rendered him mentally unstable. He's lost all credibility with a vast majority of Americans based upon his contradictory rhetoric and untenable position on the war (outside of the 25% of staunch war supporters). He can't raise any real $$$, he makes assinine and contradictory statements and looks like a party brownnoser. McCain can say whatever he wants, that doesn't make him a viable presidential candidate. Stick a fork in him because he's done. The whole candidate pool for the republicans is abysmal.
BTW: What is that thing that sticks out of the side of McCain's face. Seriously, what is that?

If contradictory rhetoric was an immediate disqualification for running for President then there would be zero candidates, ever.
You hit the nail on the head though as to why McCain can't win. MONEY. It's why he didn't beat Bush and it's why he won't win this time.
And all of the candidates from both sides look abysmal. Whoever makes the American public believe that they are the lesser of two evils is going to win.
