There have been people on this board in favor of closing our borders and others in favor of just plain throwing them open for everyone. We all know either of these are impracticle. The question is:
What would you do to solve this problem?
My own personal feeling is that because we have so many illegals in this country already, it will not work trying to send them back to their own countries. We need to set up a program whereby these people are registered so we know where they are and what they are doing. Issue them numbers similar to our SS system and have a central database to track them. No penalty if they sign up immediately, but they are deported immediately if they refuse to sign up with-in a certain period and get caught.
When they are registered, they will need to supply information as to whom they are working for, what relatives are here with them and who they are living with. Hopefully that will allow us to see if their employers are indeed paying payroll taxes for them and may alert us to others who refuse to register.
While we are doing this, we need to crack down on any further illegal immigration by building fences, hiring more border guards, using the National Guard, more electronic surveillance, etc. to stop the flow coming from the South. If we can get that under control, we can manage to find a way to handle the people already here.
Get really tough on the employers who hire these poeople and don't pay payroll taxes. Stiff fines and jail time liberally applied should open some eyes and stop a lot of this.
Encourage these people to earn their right to be a citizen by offering them English language classes and civic studies and have a system set-up where they can eventually take the oath after a period of time and have become fluent in our language.
Make this a one time offer to all immigrents, legal or illegal. If we get our borders sealed, this could work.

Problem with the "one time" deal. It's already been done at least twice already. When a statement of a one time deal is made repeatedly, as with this situation it becomes useless.

Here's my analogy:
My friend has a really cool house, with an indoor pool, fooseball table, etc. I love hanging out there, so I obey the rules of his house. If he wants me to leave my dog at home- the dog stays home. I don't march around the front of his house complaining about how unfair he is for now letting me bring my dog.
I guess my only delimma is if you love this country so much, why not respect the rules and come here legally?
The media is playing this as a "white vs hispanic" issue, but I think to many Americans it's a "Come here but don't break our laws" issue.

the problem with your analogy is that is makes sense... W would much rather do a one time free for all "Again" and the other side wants to guilt those that live here into paying for every other countries problems...

CF, I don't know why you insist on making this a Bush problem. This was going on long before he became president. And besides, he can't do anything about it without Congressional approval and there's no way those guys are going to vote to do something. Too much politics.

The Senate just moved a bill out of committee onto the floor. Problem is it does not have a Guest Worker program on it. Bush has threatened to veto a bill without this on it.
Anyways, the Sentate's bill...even if it passed through, would never pass through the House. They are trying to pass their own bill....HR4437.

because it has gotten much worse in the last 4 years... it is a Bush problem now, and his responses, which have been requested for at least 3 years, have been pathetic...

I don't think so. We didn't get 11,000,000 people to come over the border in the last 4 years. The majority have been here longer than that.

well claims now are that there are 37 million here now... and I would bet that we did get that many in 6 years... when W was asked about this issue after 9/11 he said it was a non-issue.... he continued that garbage until fairly recently...
The city of Agua Prieta claims they assist 1 million people over the border ever year. That is one single entry point... I would bet the total number for the entire border is quite staggering if anyone knew what it was...
