White House press secretary admits she didn't know what Cuban Missile Crisis was
John Byrne
Published: Monday December 10, 2007

History has a way of repeating itself.

White House press secretary Dana Perino has been front and center of the White House's push to continue to label Iran a rogue state for its pursuit of uranium enrichment technology.

This comes against the backdrop of a new intelligence estimate positing that the Islamic state abandoned its nuclear weapons in 2003.

Turns out she doesn't know quite so much about nuclear weapons as she supposes. And we're not talking about Iran.

Appearing on National Public Radio's quiz show, "Wait, Wait ... Don't Tell Me," this weekend, Perino admitted a story she'd previously only shared in private: When a reporter asked her a question during a White House briefing in which he referred to the Cuban Missile Crisis -- she didn't know what it was.

"I was panicked a bit because I really don't know about . . . the Cuban Missile Crisis," said Perino, who at 35 was born about a decade after the 1962 U.S.-Soviet nuclear showdown. "It had to do with Cuba and missiles, I'm pretty sure."

The exchange was first noted in the Washington Post.

"I came home and I asked my husband," she said on air. "I said, 'Wasn't that like the Bay of Pigs thing?' And he said, 'Oh, Dana.' "

Perino was referring to the White House briefing held on October 26, when a reporter asked her, "Do you want to address the remarks by President Putin, who said the United States setting up a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe was like the Soviet Union putting missiles in Cuba, setting up a Cuban missile crisis?"

"Well, I think that the historical comparison is not -- does not exactly work," Perino had responded.

Taking into account that she is the 4th or 5th ( help me here, Fleischer, McClellan, Snow ,??? )Press Secretary maybe she is the most qualified for the post. Know nothing, think nothing, say nothing of consequence. Just parrot, deflect and doublespeak. Perfect scapegoat material.

A basic understanding of U.S. history should be required for ANY government job - the higher the profile, the better understanding you need.

So, because she didn't know about the Cuban Missile Crisis, this means she does not possess a "basic understanding" of U.S. History??
Interesting...

Interesting...

Since the Cuban Missile Crisis was a big part of U.S. History, then yes, she doesn't.

Because she was asked a question regarding it and she chose to answer "Well, I think that the historical comparison is not -- does not exactly work".

How the eff does she know if the comparison works or not if she doesn't even know one of the two things being compared?

Well, I honestly don't know why the "eff" she thought the comparison didnt' work DWKB. I can't speak for Ms. Perino nor would I choose to...

Perhaps you can contact her and she can explain why the "eff" she felt that way??

Well Jon, perhaps you should contact Colorado St - Pueblo and Univ. of Illinois - Springfield and instruct them to do a better job of equipping future government employees with your version of a "basic understanding of U.S. history"...

Perino was born in Evanston, Wyoming, and grew up in Denver, Colorado. She attended Ponderosa High School in Parker, Colorado, a suburb of Denver.[1] Perino graduated from the University of Southern Colorado (now known as Colorado State University-Pueblo) in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in mass communications and minors in both political science and Spanish. While attending the university, Perino was active on the debate team and with KTSC-TV, the campus-based PBS affiliate where she served as host of Capitol Journal, a weekly summary of Colorado politics, and producer of Standoff, a weekly public affairs program. From there, Perino attended graduate school at the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS). Perino obtained her masters at UIS in Public Affairs Reporting while also working as a daily reporter covering the Illinois Capitol for WCIA-TV, a CBS affiliate.

Well it doesn't really why she "felt" that way. Her gut doesn't come into play here. It also doesn't matter why she thought that way either since she was uneducated on the core of the question. Other than that, I don't find you cute so you can save the winks.

If one were to rank the top 10 most important political/historical crises of the 20th Century, " The Cuban Missile Crisis " would arguably be in the top 3 and Dana Perino doesn't have a clue. I imagine the , on the brink of Nuclear combatants going to war , using their respective nuclear arsenals, qualifies that event as an event that should be ingrained in most minds.

This link is for you, Dana.

And again I ask, why is it required that the Press Sec. have an understanding of the Cuban Missile Crisis?
And thanks for that second link Wally! I'm always up for a photo of Tila Tequila!!!!

82, you have a strange way of "not defending". Do you honestly believe a basic understanding of U.S. history isn't necessary for the person who is feeding info from the white house to the public? For this admin, yeah she's probably over qualified, but for those of us who prefer representitives of this government to have.... nevermind.

I predict the next White House press secretary under this admin to be... Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
