Yes to both. Such a test would be the interview process. I am thinking a normal interview process would indicate whether or not someone is so dumb they do not know what the Cuban Missile Crisis is. Pretty sure the Press Secretary interview process should reveal such blatant dumbness.
Really? I guess I envision the interview process for the Press Sec position to be much more heavily weighted towards the prospects ability to communicate, to present a position, to address a vigorous audience, to field wide-ranging questions on the fly, and far less about the persons' knowledge level of the Cuban Missile Crisis...
In fact, I would go so far as to say that if I were President, I am quite certain a discussion of the Cuban Missile Crisis would most definitely NOT come up in the interview process... And I would take it a step further and wager a guess that in ALL previous administrations, all Press Secs were not asked about their knowledge of the Cuban Missile Crisis...

Does anyone actually believe our President understands the Cuban Missile Crisis? Sadly I have my doubts.
Of course he does! Down is Texas, Cuban Missiles are code for a great Cuban cigar!!! He knows full well the crisis that has been brought on by the embargo!!!!!

It wouldn't have to come up really. The dumbness would reveal itself.

Still looking for that last-minute Christmas gift for White House press secretary Dana Perino? May we recommend a gift certificate for the forthcoming book on the Cuban Missile Crisis by our colleague Michael Dobbs, "One Minute to Midnight: Kennedy, Khrushchev, and Castro on the Brink of Nuclear War," due out next summer?
Maybe if she did the conferences in a see through blouse, we would be distracted.

LMAO that was my EXACT thought.
Heh, Dana...before I hire you. Uh, I was told to eh, ask you about some...history. Just in case you were left behind or something. I told Karl that nothing matters BB. That's Before Bush. Ha! I got to get them calender people working on that. Anyways, Karl said those damn reporters might ask about Cuba. Shoot, don't worry about it. There was some missiles, and then they lost a bunch of pigs in their bay. What matters now is, uh, that we don't like them, except when they are holding our terrorists at our base.
Leave it to 82 to defend (yes, concidering you are the ONLY one here that is making your argument, that is what you are doing) Dana, but throw personal insults at posters.
Well Jon, perhaps you should contact Colorado St - Pueblo and Univ. of Illinois - Springfield and instruct them to do a better job of equipping future government employees with your version of a "basic understanding of U.S. history"...
As a Colorado resident, I'm embarrassed for the state college system.
How does someone get a undergraduate minor in PoliSci and not learn about the Cuban Missile Crisis? It's only one of the most significant political and foreign policy events of the last 50 years. I learned about it in 8th grade government class.
Oh, and for anyone wondering...yes, the Cuban Missile Crisis is relevant to today's world. The reporter asked her a lucid and appropriate question, given the saber rattling from Putin.
*sigh* It would be so nice if adults were back in charge of this country.

Hey, 82, had you ever heard of the Bay of Pigs before this thread?
(just kidding)
I was kind of wondering the same thing.
My two cents' worth: I am CERTAIN she was TAUGHT about the Cuban Missile Crisis...whether or not she was paying any attention is a different story. I don't blame the educational system; I blame the student.

Yes... I would be quite surprised if Ms. Perino went through her entire educational career, and was never exposed to the Bay of Pigs...
But again, IMO, that's besides the entire point of this thread. My contention has simply been, why in the world is it important that a Press Sec. know of the Cuban Missile Crisis?? Nobody has yet been able to answer that question...

Honestly, after hearing how DEI historically referred to cops, I always assumed the Bay of Pigs was simply a collection of cops up in San Francisco... Who knew...

If you don't know why she should know about the CMC, it won't do any good to discuss further.
