Marriage penalty - should not have one - everyone should be taxed the same.
Mortgage interest deduction does discriminate against those who don't own a house - if I choose to rent, why should I be penalized?
Agreed on all of that.
So, then you should disagree with the liberal leadership in that they wish to tax rich people at such a higher rate because that is discriminatory against them?

As stated before - a flat tax would be the fairest of all. Eliminate all tax credits, shelters, etc, and tax everyone the same.
Originally posted by WaywardFan I will argue that while he may be in an apolitical environment, he's never been apolitical himself.
I think, particularly as he gets older, Buffett is making sure his legacy is set - and his legacy will be Berkshire Hathaway. He will push for what ever makes his business stronger and the returns for his shareholders higher.
Originally posted by Chris_Sanders Indeed, that is part of what makes him great.
McCain consistently stands up for what he believes in. For his party...against his party...he votes and speaks with what he feels.
Even if you don't agree with everything he does, I really appreciate that sort of honesty in the world of politics now.
Of course, it is a sad indictment of our political system in that being true to yourself earns you the title "political maverick."
It shouldn't be so rare as to have it's own title.
McCain is not a great man, as you say.
He's a typical politician as well as a hypocrite and a guy that abstains from voting more than making a decision on the issues.
He is agressively against Ultimate Fighting because of it's alleged "brutality." But when he is asked about the "brutality" of boxing, does McCain suggest we make changes or do away with it also? UM...No. His "stealing-govt-drugs-earmarked-for-kids" wife is one of the Hensley's and that means beer, as in Budweiser...a huge boxing sponsor. So McCain will usually dance and weave his way out of talking on that matter. Wouldn't want to say something to hurt the family business...
And years ago - McCain claimed he would not use his past years as a POW in any way to try and win votes (this had previously upset some veteran's groups, of all people). The very next run for re-election, McCain released a commercial of him standing by the Grand Canyon...first words out of his mouth..."Hi there. I'm John McCain, I was a POW."
And whenever you look in the paper and see the boxes showing how our politicians have voted? McCain's more than most says "abstained."
Not all Republicans are "in love" with McCain. UGH

I won't vote for him, I do know that much.
I really haven't liked him much since...1987, or 1988. I went to an assembly for all the local high school students interested in the military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard and Coast Guard). It was held at the Saquaro High auditorium. Every branch had men in uniform talking about what it meant to be to be in the service, etc. They all talked about the pride and duty, etc. Except John McCain. He just went on and on about...John McCain. "I was a POW. I could have died many times over. I was tortured physically and emotionally. I...I....I..." Bleh!

Is that why you don't like him?

Originally posted by WaywardFan According to the liberals' definition of 'rich', my family falls into that category. Trust me, I am NOT rich. With another child coming in days and still no house, driving a 12 year old car, I certainly don't feel rich.
$1,000 more a year IS a big deal to me. I'm all for a political figure offering me back more of MY money.
You've stated a similiar assertion in the past? What IS considered rich based on this tax cut/"liberals'" definition. I find it hard to believe how anyone that cannot purchase a house would be considered rich.
From what I know the Bush tax cut would not cut my taxes, and I own a house and two new vehicles. I am certainly not rich.

Brian, ever served in the military? Somehow I am guessing you haven't.
