In Florida, advocates of solar energy predict that demand for photovoltaic power systems will increase in the state as a result of escalating electricity bills. Dominick Porretto Jr., a certified electrical contractor, recently set up 10 photovoltaic panels on the roof of his building to supply power to his home/office in Pompano Beach. The panels, manufactured by SunPower, will supply part of his apartment's energy requirements year round, even when the sky is overcast. Porretto anticipates saving roughly $253 annually on his Florida Power & Light bills, which currently reach as high as $200 per month. He believes others in Florida will start turning to solar energy equipment as they become more aware of the rebates available. Porretto's system typically retails for $8,600 after rebates. State law currently provides rebates of up $20,000 for consumers and up to $100,000 for businesses that install solar energy equipment. The federal government is also providing up to $2,000 in tax credits for investments in new solar panels and new solar water heating systems that satisfy IRS specifications.
