It's kind of ironic because there are going to people who argue for stricter gun control yet won't to want invade someones privacy in order to prevent them from purchasing a firearm.

It is ridiculous though that it was so easy for this nutjob to get a gun. So much for the Brady Bill.
But you are missing the operative point here.

If you chose to purchase a gun then you have made that decision. I have not made the choice to allow the NSA to tap my phone, bank records, ISP logs etc, etc, etc.

Personal choice is the differnce

That was unfathomable to me.

Cho was at least out of the house, but with all the complaints from teachers, roomates, stalked women, wouldn't his family have HAD to know something was up and considered putting him in a facility?

I guess I can't fathom someone being that good of an actor that people at school know he's got issues, but his parents and family can't see it?

I'm not blaming the family I just can't for the life of me understand how so many people saw this and reported him and nobody ever stepped in and committed the whack job?
Perhaps they didn't/don't speak English & no one bothered to get an interpreter.

I wish the patriot act was controlled or monitored by congress and the courts.

It gives the administration close to a free hand to abuse out civil rights

It's this sort of thinking that compels me to frame the issue of evil and terror as I do... Marginalization of the true threats, cloaked under the bogus veil of "privacy" and how the big, bad gov't is spying on you under your very own bedsheets...
How tiring nidan... and how sad...

Under my bedsheets?

Note to self: Dutch oven the government tonight.

Completely valid point. So you would argue for voluntary access to medical records as part of the application process? Somehow I still think the ACLU would stand in the way of that because they like to be difficult.

Nonetheless there needs to be a national database that is fed by the courts, psychiatrists and government agencies who deem individuals unfit to carry a firearm. Seems like this should have been done a long time ago.

You have an excessively negative view of the ACLU.

There are many ways this could be handled, like the 'non eligible' result

The ACLU's agenda in many cases is a problem. Any organization founded by a communist with the hopes of defeating capitalism does not garner much support from me.

Let's stay on point though and leave the ACLU for another thread.

Oregon must be different than AZ (no surprise there) but here you fill out a form with enough info so they can call the proper authorities and run a background check on the spot. I'm pretty sure they only check for a criminal record. That is it... So if Cho was deemed mentally ill it wouldn't have been caught unless it was added into the states database and the background checks were able to check these db's as well.
