US begins switch to RFID passports
By ITWeb, 28 October 2005
The US State Department has finalised plans to go ahead with passports containing radio frequency identification chips, reports eWeek.
Despite gaining support from only 1% of the US public, the State Department has finalised plans to go ahead with passports containing radio frequency identification (RFID) chips, reports eWeek.
The department plans to begin implementing the electronic passport programme in December with a pilot test of government employees who use official passports for work.
It will begin issuing the electronic ID to citizens generally early next year and plans to have all passports RFID-enabled by October 2006.

So...who can tell me why this is stupid?

So much for gov't of the people for the people...
After the manufactures came up with this idea for "inventory" purposes, it was only a matter of time before this technology was going to be used by gov't agencies.
9/11 gave them the excuse needed and I am sure these will also wind up in money at some point. But hey, at least the company who owns the patent is going to get filthy rich off our lack of civil liberties and personal freedom.
Also, if I am walking around with a US passport, isn't it possible for someone to have the technology to recognize me as an American?
Not as simple as that! RFID technology involves programming the individual chips. To be able to "read" the information on the device would require knowing the program and encryption code.

You forgot the hardware (RFID portal)

Because now that information can be read from a distance.
Also those passports could be tracked with the right equipment.
Kind of like cars that have the toll passport can be read as they pass under the sensor.
Uhh... I don't think so. RFID doesn't broadcast but only a couple feet. You have to have a special portal to pass the RFID tag through (for packages) so I would imagine you will need a dedicated RFID scanner for the passports which will more than likely use an encryption code of some sort.
Your second statement is exactly what RFID is used for. Keeping tabs on were a package/human is.
Like I said... I am not for this but the technology is not there yet for the hack. I should bold 'YET'!!

From what I understand RFID tags go up to 6 feet and some can have longer ranges.
Also, I don't think most RFID tags actively transmit at all. They usually respond to an RF signal. Even if you don't get the information because it is encrypted I am sure that you could tell if there was something responding to the query.
If the technology is there to have RFID in something like a passport then the technology to hack into it is probably not far behind.
