Unions Win? No Strike

Contracts extended for Arizona grocery workers

Associated Press
Oct. 24, 2003 09:30 AM

Contracts covering some 14,000 Fry's and Safeway workers in Arizona were extended indefinitely Friday. The pacts were due to expire tomorrow night at midnight.

The extension is subject to seven days notice of cancellation.

Negotiators for the grocery chains and the United Food and Commercial Workers worked out the agreement.

Among the issues on the table are health care and pension benefits, cuts in Sunday pay, and a two-tiered system and would offer new hires lower benefits and pay.

Ironically, unions aren't that strong in AZ.

It's a right-to-work state, so individual employess can choose whether or not to join a union.

Still, no strike is good news.

And, if I am reading this right, they extended the existing contract which is basically what the unions were after in the first place.

The only thing this means is that there is no deadline for negotiating. The current contract is only extended until one side or the other breaks off talks or a new contract is agreed on.

There will still be a strike/lockout unless the two sides agree on a new deal.

Fry's must have had a hard time hiring all of those extra "replacement workers" they were trying to get.

Either way, the dead-line passes and they are working under the old agreement - it is a win for the union (even if it is short lived).
