Senator tells CNN he believes Republican leaked info on CIA jails
Senator Trent Lott (R-MS) told CNN's Ed Henry Tuesday afternoon that he believed it was a Republican senator who gave information about secret CIA jails abroad to the Washington Post, RAW STORY can report.
Lott said that much of the information contained in the Post report -- which stated that the U.S. was holding terrorist suspects in secret CIA jails overseas -- was discussed at a meeting of Republican senators last Tuesday.
The revelation appears to torpedo the political gambit of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) who called on the Senate and House intelligence committees to investigate who leaked the information to the Post....

Lott told reporters the information in the Post story was the same as that given to Republican senators in a closed-door briefing by Vice President Dick Cheney last week.
"Every word that was said in there went right to the newspaper," he said. "We can't keep our mouths shut."
Lott, a former Senate majority leader who was pushed out in 2002, suggested the information was passed along by a senator to a staff member.
He said the investigation Frist and Hastert want may result in an ethics probe of a Senate member.

Hats off to whatever Republican Senator squealed, whether it be McCain or Hagel, etc. That took some courage.
Whoever did do it, be he Repub or Dem, should wind up in jail. That definetely is classified information and should be considered on the line of treason. It is 1,000 times more serious than the Plame case.

I can't believe any of you would be actually happy about this.
The USA has truly won their last war with crap like this. We won't be able to win another one until they are at our doorstep and by then it will be too late.

That remains to be seen. Also, why was he only briefing Republican Senators? Aren't there Democrats on the Senate Intelligence committee that should have been involved? This doesn't sound like an official briefing. Sounds more like a propaganda or spin session. My guess is that the "investigation" into this "leak" will never see the light of day. I would not be suprised if this turned out to be part of some Republican ploy.
So the world found out that we have secret prisions in Europe where these so called "enemy combatants" could be subjected to torture without it making headlines. I'm kind of glad that this came to light. I don't think any harm to our troops or national security will result. Our country is hopefully on the other side of and moving away from our policies of torture and deceiving the American public and this coming to light will only help this cleansing process.
