Too Conservative For Phoenix Talk Radio?

I think what they are doing to Charles Goyette at KFYI is a shame. He is by far and away the best local host at that station and he is just getting jerked around. I have e-mailed the ding-bat program director that is "in charge" there - chickboss@clearchannel.com.

Here is a sample of the nonsense:

Criticizing Bush? Well then, must I be some sort of rug-chewing liberal? Not even close. As a boy, I stood on the grass in a small Arizona town square when Barry Goldwater officially began his 1964 presidential run. And I was there for the last official event of the Goldwater campaign. My job was to recruit and manage my fellow junior-high and high-school conservatives in a phone bank operation, calling supporters to fill up as many buses as possible to help pack the stadium—a show of strength for the nation's television viewers. Of course that's an insignificant role to play in a presidential campaign, but it was pretty heady stuff for a 14-year-old kid from Flagstaff.

and KFYI's response:

Newstalk 550 KFYI prides itself on offering a variety of opinions on our airwaves. We don't sit on the fence; 550 KFYI is passionate talk radio. When your star performers are intelligent, opinionated people like talk shows hosts, it's inevitable that they will sometimes disagree. I believe this discourse is healthy. Our listeners are better served if 550 KFYI offers diverse opinions from hosts and callers alike so that our audience makes informed decisions.

For those of you out of the metro Phoenix area, the show is streamed if you'd like to take a listen: http://www.kfyi.com/main.html. He is on from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm MST.

I may even fire off a note to Clear Channel:

What exactly are they doing to him and why?

He was moved from a drive (prime) time slot to an evening slot after he roundly blasted the Bush Administration for the invasion of Iraq. But (read his letter) he is more conservative than any other host on that station, but from a text book definition of conservatism, not support someone simply because they call themselves a Republican. The station suspended him for his position on the war, replaced him, and once they started getting some heat, they banished him to night time. There is a school of thought that Clear Channel made the call, because this happened at about the same time the station in Colorado Springs fired the DJ for playing the Dixie Chicks.

He took his stand before the invasion - where every other radio jock was pounding the drums.

He wasn't against taking out saddam - He just wanted more definitive proof before we took out a country.

He would get alot of calls from people calling him un-american and stuff. But he kept his cool and was a class act during that time.

Goyette's show is ok and I don't know all the details about why they moved him. I know what his story is but that doesn't mean it is the whole story.

My favorite host is still Barry Young. He is pretty funny.

I would probably rather listen to CG than Liddy and Hill on the way home.

I disagreed with Charles Goyette on a few issues but I found his point of view to be well reasoned and thought out. If they did move him just because of the anti-war stance as he alledges then that is not right.

BTW Bruce Jacobs is an idiot. He was an idiot when he was on the sports station and he is no less of one now that he has a political show IN MORNING DRIVE TIME NO LESS.

Charles Goyette:

It's not like the guy got fired. He got moved. If he doesn't like it, let him look elsewhere for employment.

I put the violin there because this guy was so anti-Cardinals-stadium it was ridiculous. Left out the facts when discussing it, just put out his opinion on the air that it was a Bidwill money grab.

Hosts get moved all the time. He says it is because of his opinion about the war. That doesn't make it so.

Stations are usually more concerned about ratings than potitical correctness about the war or anything else. Especially stations like KFYI.

True. But you must admit the timing is rather coincidental.

And, if he was such a rating liability, why renew is contract in the first place?

I will try to answer that question if you can tell me why Bruce Jacobs even has a job.

I heard he was related to somebody at Clear Channel in Phoenix.

Seriously.

That's what I was thinking too. I am a big fan of talk radio, and the name of the game is RATINGS.

Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, Cunningham, Medved, Humpreys, Ingraham all blast Bush all the time.

His anti-war stance likely dropped his ratings, which prompted the move. So he was moved due to his comments but only because by making them he hurt his ratings. Just a theory.
