Some thought that Cheney scored a point when he claimed he had never met Edwards.
Tim Russert, this morning on the Today Show called Cheney out - reminding the Veep that Edwards and Cheney were on Meet the Press together in 2001 - a show that Russert hosts - and the two talked, shook hands, etc.
Also, that they had been to prayer breakfests together.
Another Cheney lie.

In perhaps the most awkward blooper of the evening, Cheney told Edwards to his face that they had never met before the debate, despite evidence they had.
Edwards' campaign later provided a transcript of a February 2001 prayer breakfast at which Cheney began his remarks by acknowledging the North Carolina senator. The campaign said the two also met when Edwards accompanied the other North Carolina senator, Elizabeth Dole, to her swearing-in ceremony.
I didn't watch the debate. Is there some reason why Cheney would have gained from saying he hadn't met Edwards? Why would he "lie" about something like that? Maybe instead of "lying" he simply forgot.
Not everything that comes out of someone's mouth that isn't true is a "lie."

He was trying to make a point that Edwards was not experienced enough, was absent from the Senate, and was only using the Senate as a springboard for higher office.
It was a key part of his statement. If he forgot, then he is either senile, or is not good at fact-checking.

Possible. Or he could have meant he never met him in a working manner outside of the debate. But just failed to word it that way.

This is idiotic. Pouncing on this is akin to when the Republicans were claiming Bush was tired during his debate. So Cheney goofed on meeting Edwards or whatever. I doubt he "lied" about it (if anyone can explain the benefit to making this lie, please do). Probably just didn;t recall it.
Sorry but IMO this is petty (like the sleepy issue) and personally I expect more from Russert. There were alot of more important stuff I would think Russert could have focused on (and maybe did since I didn't see the Today Shop gig).

AZCB - if this was just a small gaffe, no biggie. But it was a deliberate part of Cheney's plan to discredit Edwards - so it is a big deal.
From MSNBC:
Morning After at the Scorer's Table (Keith Olbermann)
A major truth foul has been declared against Vice President Dick Cheney, and his narrow victory over John Edwards in last night's Light Heavyweight Debate has been overturned by the Boxing Commission scoring the bout (me).
While rounds were scored even and Edwards was ahead on points at its conclusion, Cheney had been awarded the contest on the intangibles and the overall impact -- largely because of a memorable phrase that underpinned his left-right combination that nailed Edwards in the solar plexus of his inexperience and the breadbasket of his alleged prioritizing of electioneering instead of Senatorial work: "In my capacity as vice president, I am the president of Senate, the presiding officer. I'm up in the Senate most Tuesdays when they're in session. The first time I ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight."
But Cheney and Edwards have met at least twice, once inside the Senate. Who did the Vice President know, and when did he know him?Within an hour of the last of the 21 rounds, a "freeze frame" from a C-SPAN telecast of Senator Edwards and Vice President Cheney at a 2001 Prayer Breakfast was being circulated around the internet.
And by morning, the Kerry-Edwards campaign had produced irrefutable evidence that when Elizabeth Dole was sworn in by Senate President Cheney as the junior senator from North Carolina just last year, it was Senator Edwards who (with her husband) escorted her to Mr. Cheney. Senator Dole was sworn in using Mrs. Edwards' bible.
The only way Cheney could have avoided meeting Edwards was if he'd had an attack of tunnel vision, or cauliflower ear.
"The first time I ever met you" was the cornerstone of post-fight analysis and Cheney's goal of making viewers dismiss Edwards. It's now been turned around on the Vice President and accompanying spin doctors. The prospect of this outcome was forecast in last night's original scoring of this bout. This reporter expects a day of heavy piling on by Democratic spinners, with great success.
The Boxing Commission (me) thus penalizes Fighter Cheney 10 points for untruthfulness, 10 points for forgetting his acquaintances, 2 points for snideness, and 2 points for hitting himself with his own jab. Republican spin doctors are penalized 10 points each for premature jocularity. This fight is awarded to Fighter Edwards on points.
The Boxing Commission will reconvene here Friday night for Bush-Kerry II, the Kablooey in St. Louie.
Frankly I would take a point away from edwards for screwing up the chance to highlight cheney's goof.
Who cares what the camps say after the debate - Edwards had an opportunity to take the moment in front of a t.v. audience and failed to pull the trigger.
In a close election each side has got to learn to sieze those opportunities!

Define met. Just because they were in the same room doesn't mean they ever met. I realize what Cheney was trying to do but to focus on the semantics and not on the bigger picture is so typical and is what has lead us down this path to lunacy we are on. I just find it hilarious people are jumping on this "met" thing when nobody can produce a picture of them shaking hands as if they know each other or are introducing themselves for the first time.
IMO, it is small potatoes and given Edwards didn't address it at some point leads me to think he must not have thought it was a big deal either otherwise he would have had some "ammunition" to use. And before someone says "Edwards was concentrating on the debate and not individual words" I'll say, the dude is a lawyer. He hears every word and if he felt it was something he could use to win his case, he would have unleashed it.
