If you find religion hokey, why are you on the Religion forum? And if you see that it's nothing new, why would you post on a thread?

All I'm saying is that these guys want to have a serious discussion, so respect that.

Mike

archeology

... used by christian apologists to support the material existance of a certain Jesus Christ figure. Ok. Here's a couple things -
1> the famous killing of the firstborn. During that time period, Herod had political enemies and there are plenty of criticisms of him by several writers of the time. No mention of any mass child killing. Only the christians writing 200 years later tell of this.
2> Herod was already dead six years before the alleged birth of Jesus.
3> the "30 pieces of silver" - In that time, people used minted coins - the gospel writers, again, 200 years later just got that detail wrong.
4> not archeological, but still of interest - the Jesus story closely parallels that of Krisna from India several centuries earlier. A good portion of Jesus's alleged parables were written five centuries before by Buddhist writers! Also consider Joseph Campbell's work on the archetype of the hero/martyr. He writes about the timeless human need for these figures.

I understand the need that a lot of people have for a hero/martyr figure. The Jesus story SOUNDS real good, but that does not make it TRUE. Your god and savior resides in YOUR subconscious mind. Very powerful indeed......

People that believe in aliens and flying saucers do not: kill or shame unbelievers or try to burn our constitution and replace it with their bible. You'll never find me bothering to argue with them - they are no threat to freedom. Religious extremism in the form of American fundamentalist christianity IS a threat to freedom, so I fight it......

I don't hate the believer, just the belief

First off this is the POLITICS and religion forum, I feel I need to represent my opinons on this matters as others do. When someone says that the New Testiment is "reliable" I have to laugh at that. Instead of taking something as faith he is trying to pass it off as fact.

I have read the bible countless times while I was in prison (Catholic School) and viewing the book with a rational mind I can see no difference between it and a fairy tale. Again, that is just my opinon. I look around and see people like Eric Rudolph who has killed abortion doctors, bombed gay nightclubs because of his interpretation of the bible, I get a little disgusted with religion.

I see people like Billy Graham and Jim Bakker who have used people's beliefs against them to make money. People like Jessie Jackson who is so full of $hit he is black. If he believes his faith so much, why doesn't he practice what he preaches? I see these huge churches with gold rotunda's (like the Mormon one in Maryland that is suppose to be solid gold) and I realize religion is all about money. People are held captive of their fear of hell and the "wrath of God" that they won't use their own brains to rationalize between truth and fantasy.
Again, just my opinion

Nice post, though a bit cynical

The Bhaaghavad Gita (or however it is spelled) has a character in it, who is lighter skin (than the rest of the Indians) and is sounds very much like Jesus. There is a span of Jesus' life that hasn't been accounted for, and some believe that Jesus may have visited India.

And you forget to mention that many are afraid, that when you die there is no afterlife...

Religious Dogma is one of the main sources of oppression throughout human history. To me, there is a truth, but I think we all must find it in our own hearts, not from human wisdom.

IMO God is here, in our own hearts, not inside a church walls or in a supposedly holy book.

Why is Jesus always depicted as a white man with Blue eyes? Considering where he lived his life and the state of mankind at that time it is very likely he was dark skinned and looked like today's Arab man.

A European translation of him.

Christianity was marketed mainly to whites, so it made since to make him white.

"The Son of God" is another European invention that the Romans used prior to the writings of the New Testament.

The fact that the Bible blames Jews for the death of Jesus, while Roman historians blame the Romans....

If I remember correctly, in Revelations it says that the Jews will accept the Anti-Christ as their savior and not realize until it is too late.....but before all of that, the rapture will come and sweep up all of those who believe into heaven

Ahhh....Revelations. The most misunderstood book of the Bible.

As far as prophecies go, it is one that has already been fullfilled.

The number 666 in Greek/Hebrew numerology translates to Nero, not Satan. Nero was called the beast, by his own mother when he killed her.

Actually, Ryan, there is no such thing as the rapture.

It was invented by a 1820's minister in Britian. Only fundamentals believe in the myth of the rapture. Lutherans, Catholics, Methodists, Epsicopals, etc do not.

What language was the original Bible written in? Aramaic? Latin?

Uhhh, yeah...and you have proof of this somehow? That this prophecy has been fulfilled?

And if it HAS been fulfilled, and the 6000 year old Bible predicted it, doesn't that give you the proof you need?

Not that I'm saying that Nero fulfilled anything, and I think that's hogwash

Whaaaaat? No such thing as the rapture?

What do mean by that...that there WONT be a Rapture? Or that the word doesn't exist?
