I enjoyed seeing the torch go by in 84, out in the middle of nowhere on highway 50 in missouri, we drove up our gravel road, sat out in lawn chairs and the AT&T van pulls right up, they were trading runners right there, got to hold an unlit torch and see it go by.
Whatever the origination of the cerremony, I liked it.
On the protest front the Chinese security forces are doing what?
Whatever, they are not our friends, they're not anyone's friends, protest away, next time grow a real government or don't host the games, losers.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.
According to an Olympic games historian, these problems only occur when totalitarian states are allowed to host the Olympics, because they invariably exert their totalitarianism on the participants at all levels, which is against the Olympic spirit, and he actually is fine with the protests. He said these games are one huge photo-op for the Chinese government to show its own people it has taken a dominant role on the world stage and has nothing to do with the spirit of sportsmanship. (Like any of the recent games did.)
Olympic historians also say that previous Olympic boycotts have had little or no impact and only punish the atheletes.
If the Free Tibet movement wanted to have an effective protest...they should have hung a Rolling Rock banner on the Golden Gate. Taken the proceeds from that endorsement deal and send it to fund Tibetan rebels. What happened on Wednesday had zero impact on the policies of China towards Tibet.

Nice to see that the Olympic torch is now a symbol of hope and friendship. It makes the impact of Jesse Owens more impressive.
Incredible picture, Joe. WOW!
I'm am very glad I didn't live during that time, and especially place.....

That seems pretty frickin' narrow on your part, Giz. People are being slaughtered and mauled in Tibet and you're unhappy cuz you couldn't see the parade? Oooooooooookkkkkkkaaaaaaayyyyyyyy......
"Regular" US citizens NEED to have the kind of furor for issues that they strongly believe in. Our constitution provides for it and occasionally we get to see it. But it seems to have been lost is some apathy and hopelessness.
Good on these people for their protest. It gives at least some modicum of notice to the media that some people are outraged.
After all of the crap you've given Gizmo on this thread I have to ask you, just how much have you done for the "Free Tibet" movement?

What? WHAT???? Just what the billy-do-hell does that have to do with the point, other than you looking for a reason to pick a fight?

And what the billy-do-hell do all your parade comments have to do with anything? At least I tried to explain my position rather than just some snide remarks.
Seems like you are really into this whole Tibet thing. Perhaps you could enlighten me on why it is so important as to disrupt a non-political event that a lot of people turned out to enjoy. I guess I am just ignorant to the whole situation and like parades a bit too much.

What the hell does your trolling of Gizmo's posts have anything to do with the topic other than trying to pick a fight?
And your response answered my intial question. Which means you've done nothing for the "Free Tibet" movement but give a guy on a messageboard crap for wanting to watch the Olympic torch rather than protesters.
You radical you.

Kung-fu star Jackie Chan to chop down Olympic protestors
Tuesday, April 15, 2008
Kung-fu action hero Jackie Chan has warned anyone planning to stop him carrying the Olympic Torch he will come out fighting.
The Hong Kong hardman, whose films include Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon, is due to carry the torch when it nears Beijing, the venue for this summer's Olympic Games.
The Torch Relay's journey through Europe and North America has seen it become a magnet for protestors angry at China's human rights record and the clampdown in Tibet.
However, Chan insists anyone trying to protest on his watch can expect short shrift, warning:
'Demonstrators better not get anywhere near me.'
And the 54-year-old, speaking at the launch of latest movie Forbidden Kingdom, claimed many of the protestors are simply publicity seekers.
'They are doing it for no reason. They just want to show off on the TV,' he said. 'They know, "if I can get the torch, I can go on the TV for the world news".'
And the actor said he's excited about his homeland hosting the Olympics for the first time, insisting it will speed up China's development.
'It will provide another way for us to tell the world about Chinese culture,' added Chan.
'We are not right about everything. Things are getting better in China but we can change and are changing. We want to learn from the rest of the world as well as teach others about our ways and our culture.'
What the hell does your trolling of Gizmo's posts have anything to do with the topic other than trying to pick a fight?
He was mad that he missed a parade because of demonstrations regarding the murder, torture, etc. of the people of Tibet. I thought that was shallow and voiced that opinion.

I did not answer any such question nor do you have the slightest clue as to anything I've done or not done concerning this movement... AND IT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE POINT I WAS MAKING, I.E. I BELIEVE THAT THEIR ISSUE EASILY TRUMPED HIS ISSUE. MY OPINION.
So.... using your logic, I guess anytime you post an opinion or take anyone to task on their opinion, I'm justified in asking exactly what it is you've done in the furtherance of your opinion... and if the answer is nothing, then your opinion doesn't count for anything? And then I can say you are trolling? Business as usual for you, I guess.
