Every year an independent tax watchdog group analyzes the average tax
burden on Americans, and then calculates the "Tax Freedom Day". This is the day
after which the money you earn goes to you, not the government.
This year, tax freedom day was April 11th. That's the earliest it has been
since 1991. It's latest day ever was May 2nd, which occurred in 2000.
Notice anything special about those dates?
Today John Kerry gave a speech in which he claimed Americans are actually
paying more taxes under Bush, despite the tax cuts. He gave no explanation and
provided no data for this claim.
Another interesting fact: Both George Bush and John Kerry are wealthy men.
Bush owns only one home, his ranch in Texas. Kerry owns 4 mansions, all
worth several million dollars. (His ski resort home in Idaho is an old barn
brought over from Europe in pieces. Not your average A-frame).
Bush paid $250,000 in taxes this year; Kerry paid $90,000. Does that sound
right? The man who wants to raise your taxes obviously has figured out a way
to avoid paying his own.

Maybe, but not necessarily. Kerry might get more tax write-offs for owning 4 homes or other business ventures. What are each man's total net worth?
Plus, I'm suspicious about Bush paying $250,00 in taxes this year. Hell, the job of president doesn't pay that much - he must be raking it in somewhere else.
Anyone else see the Frontline piece on PBS last night on tax cheats? American corporations bear only 15% of the tax burden in America. Companies legally keep two sets of books, one for shareholders, one for the tax man. One can reflect billions in profits, the other can reflect just a little profit.
Also, the IRS has been crippled by underfunding, and can no longer effectively police tax cheats.

RC, you can only use the interest on your primary residence as a tax reduction. Be that as it may, there is no way you can determine what taxes either man should pay without knowing what their income is. Kerry might have tax deferrements (there is no such thing as a write-off) from investments to lower his tax liability. Bush might also have them, but don't use them as he would have people going over them with a fine tooth comb and doesn't want to give anyone something to holler about.
As far as Bush having other income than what he earns as president, I would hope so. If John Kerry gets in, he will also have other income, but I'll bet he pays a lot more taxes at that time, because he would have the same problem Bush has with people trying to ferret out anything to embarrass him.
The crippling of the IRS took place in the early 90's when folks were complaining how mean and nasty they were treating people. Congress and the president put in extra controls to make the tax man a little more friendlier....unfortuantely this went from one extreme to another.

Anyone who's ever had a run-in with the IRS will tell you; Clinton and Congress didn't go far enough.

lol....lets see the IRS don't have enough folks to process the paper work. The auditors entire work load is assigned after the filings of april 15 - leaving late filings to even less to zero people to review.

The problem is, they are not auditing the right type of taxpayer - the ones that make a lot of money, yet only pay 10-20%. That is where the abuse is. Unfortunately, they don't get audited much.

Well then it's interesting that by starting this thread you were assuming Kerry is guilty of some sort of tax shenanigans. You conservatives seem to be drawn to this kind of smear strategy like a moth is to a light.

The real question is how much did his wife pay.

Rivercard, I posted this and then gave you an explanation of how you couldn't use this article to determine what taxes either man should pay. How does that say that I think Kerry is guilty of tax shenanigans? It's the exact opposite. I gave you the argument to refute this article.
