President says troops fighting to protect Americans from terrorism

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush said Saturday U.S. troops in Iraq were fighting to protect Americans at home from terrorism like the Sept. 11 attacks four years ago.
"Our troops know that they're fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere to protect their fellow Americans from a savage enemy," Bush said in his weekly radio address.
"They know that if we do not confront these evil men abroad, we will have to face them one day in our own cities and streets, and they know that the safety and security of every American is at stake in this war, and they know we will prevail," he said.
His comments came as the public shows more discontent with his handling of Iraq. Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, became a symbol for anti-war protesters after camping near Bush's Crawford, Texas, ranch, where he is on vacation, urging him to bring U.S. troops home.
More than 1,800 U.S. troops have been killed in Iraq and thousands more wounded.
The Bush administration justified going to war in Iraq in 2003 by saying it posed a threat because of stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction. None have been found.
Critics say Iraq had nothing to do with the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington and that the administration has tried to tie Iraq to terrorism since the war to justify its actions.
"In a few weeks, our country will mark the four-year anniversary of the attacks of September the 11th, 2001. On that day, we learned that vast oceans and friendly neighbors no longer protect us from those who wish to harm our people," Bush said. "And since that day, we have taken the fight to the enemy," he said.
"We're fighting the terrorists in Afghanistan, Iraq, and around the world, striking them in foreign lands before they can attack us here at home," Bush said.
Next week Bush will meet with members of the Idaho National Guard, and also see members of the Mountain Home Air Force Base who played a leading role in the air bombing campaign in Afghanistan after the Sept. 11 attacks, Bush said. He will also address the Veterans of Foreign Wars Convention in Utah.
Bush likened the current situation to World War II when U.S. forces "helped former enemies rebuild and form free and peaceful societies that would become strong allies of America."
He acknowledged the deaths in the current war and said: "We owe these fallen heroes our gratitude, and we offer their families our heartfelt condolences and prayers."
"Now we must finish the task that our troops have given their lives for and honor their sacrifice by completing their mission," he said.

Please show me anywhere in that article that justifies that headline. Bias reporting at it's extreme.

Giving Bush a HUGE benefit of the doubt, let's just say that his speechwriter left open a gaping hole for Bush's critics by putting Afghanistan, Iraq, terrorists and 9-11 within close proximity of each other in his speech. As has been demonstrated over and over an over again, Iraq had nothing to do with terrorism in this country until after the war began....

Just FYI: Reporters write the stories and Editors write the headlines (which sometimes does show bias). And I'd have to agree with you in this case that the choice of wording is poor considering the content of the article ... even if it does grab attention

Along with my earlier comment on this, I also agree with you, both in the mechanics of how headlines/stories sometimes don't relate well, and the stretch, as well.

This is exactly what he say here. He makes the link quite clearly.
So what. Shouldn't the reader be able to determine what is valid. Do you feel cheated because the headline drew you to the article. In marketing , it is very simple. If the message offends you then it was not intended for you. What damage is done by this headline?
If you don't like it, wrap fish in it.

Nidan, your mind works in strange ways if you think that is a direct tie between 9/11 and Iraq.

It appears to me that by mentioning the anniversary of 9-11 and following it with the last sentence of the statement it clearly indicatates we are fighting in Iraq because of 9-11.
Where are we fighting? Iraq
What does he mean by "protect us from those who wish to harm our people" When were we attacked by Iraq or what proof does he have that Iraq was going to attack us?
It seems so clear to me that by talking about 9-11 and talking about fighting the enemy that wants to bring the fight here, all the while he is on the subject of what is going on in Iraq, that he is once again linking the two.
I don't understand your comment 40. In the first sentance you quoted there he talks about 9/11. Then follows up with we have taken the fight to the enemy.
While IMO the statement is utter BS, what we have actually done is take the fight to Iraq. Or are you suggesting that he only meant to imply only Afganistan [where there actually were terrorists].
No, sorry I can't accept this, there was a definiate implicit inclusion of Iraq in the satement

In this sentance the not only refers to Iraq, even if it is implied, but he also references 9/11. If he is not refering to Iraq here what is he talking about ?
Don't you see that this type of speech is the essence of his deceptions. He doesn't actually lie, just like he doesn't actually say we invaded Iraq because of 9/11. This is called deception.

I think he does link 9/11 and Iraq in this speech but it's not deception. It's deceptive only if he doesn't believe it. There's no doubt in my mind that Bush does believe that fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan is fighting the same people (at least type of people) that attacked America in 2001.

Americans are asking, why do they hate us? They hate what we see right here in this chamber -- a democratically elected government. Their leaders are self-appointed. They hate our freedoms -- our freedom of religion, our freedom of speech, our freedom to vote and assemble and disagree with each other.
This also isn't true, it's a great bit of rhetoric but untrue. AQ & OBL have mentioned many things they hate about the US as have other terrorist groups but never this. Getting out of Palsetine, stop stealing their oil, leave the middle east, all them to recreate a rtans national Arab state sure, but never this.
It is yet another convienient fiction produced by the White House propaganda machine. Is it a lie, don't know. Possibly not as it tough to prove. It sure is deliberatly misleading though and that to my mind constiutres a lie. A lie isn't simply telling a falsehood, it is also when you say something that is intended to be interpreted in such a way as to be at odds with the truth. That's why in court we as for not just the truth, but the whoile truth and nothing but the truth.
