If they are on the rise here I would be willing to bet they are around the country as well. It is a brutal crime and the homeowner should have the right to protect themselves!
Shane - how would you suggest a homeowner best protect him/herself?

I have never said that homeowners shouldn't be able to protect themselves...

But as I said in my last post, just because a certain crime is on the rise, doesn't make it a common crime. They certainly are horrible crimes, I agree with that.

Not really.
Well you have different groups doing them in this city and committing 2 a week per group on average. That is pretty common.

Thats like saying that Homicides really arent that common in the grand scheme of things?

Are they as common as robbery, auto theft, and other crimes? not really.

And what is the population of Las Vegas? When that is factored in, what is the chance that it could happen to you? 1:1,000,000 or greater. Not very common.

I am an advocate of home owners having a Shotgun or pistol in the house just as a means of protection. But that is not the cure all.

The thing I could recommend most to a homeowner is awareness. be aware of whose around you and your neighborhood especially as you come home from somewhere. Make sure people arent lurking around the house. Awareness is the single most thing that will protect you IMO.

I am also a huge advocate of security screens. These screens are made to withstand hundreds of pounds of pressure on them and they allow you to answer your door and still have a level of protection. The good ones let you answer the door and the person on the other side cant see you but you can see them. Many of the suspect will use a ruse such as being a salesman etc.... or even young punk kids acting like they want to sell magazines etc.....

Just be careful for who you open your door to!

Good points Shane.

Many criminals that rob or other similar crimes, stake out your house before they attack. Don't give them the opportunity to stake you out.

Shane: I've been thinking of getting a taser (sp?). Is that an effective form of self defense in your opinon? I don't want a gun.

Who cares about auto theft its a property crime! Yea its inconvienent and it sucks but property is replaceable people arent. I wouldnt use that as a barometer. Its obviously an out of control crime. Roberies per capita really arent a very common crime either when you compare to say auto theft!

You say it isnt common? Well try being the one victim who is singled out and gets robbed in your house and brutalized for 2 days as the suspects sit inside your house, eating your food, taking everything or destroying everything of importance to you! Raping your wife in front of you! Tell me then that you could use the excuse that its not common!

Shane, I'm not lessening the crime.....

don't be a jerk about it

I'm just saying it isn't common. And the facts support that!

Thanks Krang!

Yes I am a big advocate of tasers as well as long as its the gun type. They ar every affective. In fact my Dept. has just started training officers on there use as another means for the officer to protect ourselves.

I prefer the taser gun because it lets you maintain some distance. Whereas a stun gun means you must be in close quarters with the suspect. He might get lucky and knock it out of your hand. Or he may be on drugs and it wont effect him. At leats with the taser gun you csan zap the guy at say 15 feet and if its inaffective(which I doubt) youu still have some lag time to think of an alternative to self defense.

Im not being a jerk Im just making a point. Sorry you feel that way!

Things tend to hit home better when people think of themselves as the victim or possible victim.

Its a brutal crime and I dont care about statistics. It only takes once to happen to you or me for that matter.

I consider you a friend Krang and if you took offense I apologize!

Your responses in this have been very eye opening. Do other officers feel the same way (not suggesting you are off your rocker or anything)? I would have bet $1,000,000 a police officer would have said the fewer guns the better.

As an aside, my wife and I had a heavy security screen door installed in front and we love it and feel much safer as a result. Well worth the cost.

Hey, I accept, and I'm sorry to get my panties in a wad

And I totally understand your reasoning, crimes aren't just statistics.

I guess you would be shocked to know that most officers are very much pro-gun. In fact most of my co-workers(not me) are avid collectors of them!

They have more guns than I would really care to imagine. Most feel the same way I do that a ban on guns wouldnt lower crime.

Like I said before in an earlier post. A criminal whose willing to risk 20+ years in prison isnt going to change the way he is because there is stiffer penalties for having a gun. There are already gun enhancement penalties when guns are used in a crime.
