The intent was so the militia could rise up against its own govt. in the event that it startred to suppress its own people. Most of the people back then were used to being oppressed and taxed heavily and basically having there free will taken from them. The intent was to make sure that there current new govt. would never do that to any citizen of this country like in there homelands!
But it was in response to the oppression by the British which they had freed themselves of. That is what it represented. All the years of being under the British thumb in everything was the impetus for much of the Bill of Rights.

I know it was a direct result of being under british rule. But the laws were written after we had won our independence correct???
So they still couldnt be for the purpose and the right of uprising against a state we have already won our freedom from right?
Because of that they didnt want the same tohappen here. So I dont see where you are going with this I guess?
I thought it was written since we didn't have a military at the time, and that the people WERE the military (or more appropriately militia) much like the Swiss.

That is probably closer to the truth. I wonder what the Founding Fathers would think now of our large standing military, the projection of our power throughout the globe, etc.

So you dont think that the men we used during the revolutionary war was a military???
There was both in actuality if Im not mistaken the military and the militia during the revolutionary war. Much like it was portrayed in the movie The Patriot!

Sorry. my brain was working (or not) different than I was typing. I think I typed that the guns were done to allow for use AGAINST the British when I meant as a result of British rule. Obviously we already had our independence since the Constitution was written in 1787 long after we won. I was not thinking clearly (happens sometimes )
Essentially what happened was the crafters of the Constitution went the opposite of the rules the Americans had been subjected to under British rule.
I now remove myself from this conversation since if nothing else I should get my history right...being that I have a degree in history.

No the militia WAS the military. A militia is comprised of regular untrained men, not soldiers. The Continental Army was a somewhat large militia.

That is not true Krang. Men were enlisted into the army to fight the war and were trained as well. They had a complete command structure etc.....
The militia was a complete and seperate entity. That also fought in the war!
I guess Im going to have to do some research DAMNIT I HATE THAT!
Unless CB can help confirm either with his history degree???

I took American History in college just few years ago, so a lot of this is still real fresh on my mind.

G Washington commanded the military army against the British. However, each "state" had it's own militia in order to battle the British when they came across them.
Revolutionary War has never been my strong suit so I might be wrong on this.

They were hastily thrown together, given weapons and SOME training, but by no means were they professional troops.
Even militias have a complete command structure (as do crime syndicates and street gangs).

Krang I believe this is more correct. There was a full military with each individual stae militia as well!
