Thats exactly it. If you think what most of us consider law abiding citizens would turn there guns in you are nuts. People like Ryan would be in the minority. Guns are not hard to find. When kids become teenagers and they are around there buddies who illegaly have a gun they are going to be in awe because they have been kept in the dark about them. They will have no training or idea how to handle a gun and accidents will still happen.

Not to pick on Ryan but I really dont see why he even carries a gun now if he feels that he would be the first in line to turn them in. If he does it for protection? Well I hate to say it but the day guns were banned(if it happened) there will still be the need for protection. There wont be any less guns in the hands of hoodlums! Trust me!

Actually I heard the opposite from a professor of mine, and I trust what he says more than what you "heard" 5-10 years ago. Especially considering the fact that he is a published author who writes about crime and the media's portrayal of crime.

The craziest thing, is that a study showed that kids who were educated about guns (the study used police officer's children) actually were more likely to play with guns and more likely to know how to use them.

I agree, however, that it can't be done. And I do see the merit in the argument that criminals would still have guns.

Yeah Krang that may be true. But like any study it really doesnt prove a whole lot. Someone else could do a study tommorrow that tells you something completely different. I would be interested in who that study was done by.

Alot of supposed study results can be different based on whether it was done by a liberal or conservative organization. Sad but true!

I collect guns as a hobby, always have, I enjoy shooting them for sport and take safety very seriously. You will NEVER find a loaded weapon accessable in my house unless you can pry open my safe. I got certified and obtained my permit to carry a concealed weapon only after my wife was carjacked and almost raped coming home late from work, by a gun weilding jerkoff.

We went though an entire trial and made sure the guy got sent up to Durango for the rest of his life. Even though he was in jail, my wife could not go out alone at night......not even for a quick trip to the store. So she announced to me one day that she wanted to carry a gun. I supported her decision and told her I would take the class with her. So I bought her a little Walther PPK and we took the classes over a weekend. Well, turns out it wasn't for her, but I took to liking the false sense of security that a concealed weapon gives me.

I would gladly give up every gun I own and have them made into paper clips if it means someone doesn't have to experience being held at gun point, or killed by a gun in rage again.

Oh I just thought it was interesting, and since you are a police officer I thought you might find it interesting. And it wasn't done by a pro or anti group or anything like that, it was done more to study children to better improve gun safety.

The conclusion of the study, was that adults can't assume that children who have been taught gun safety will actually practice it. Adults still need to keep guns away from kids.

I feel for you Ryan and most definately your wife. I am not only a Police Officer but I have also been the victim of crime.

But I must say just because you would be willing to turn in your guns if they were banned. In no way would make the streets any safer for you or your wife that same gun wielding moron and many more just like him will still be out there. Its a beautiful thing that you have the right to carry that gun and protect yourself and your family. There are cons as well. But to me the benefits far outway the drawbacks JMHO!

Agreed!

Though Guns themselves are not dangerous. The people who handle them are.

If guns were banned I have no doubt you are right Shane. Criminals would still have guns HOWEVER there would be a slow trickle effect where people like you in our law enforcement community would be taking guns away from criminals through arrests thus over time the number of guns out there would decrease.

I am sure if guns were banned, the penalty for being caught with one would be stiff and that alone would would scare some into turning them in.

Like many of the Bill of Rights, the whole concept of what the right to bear arms amendment was about has been twisted to suit the needs of people...primarily because the writers of the Bill of Rights were so general in their wording.

I don't own a gun but if they were banned I would hope the only ones banned would be handguns and machine type weapons. Hunting weapons shouldn't be a part of banning since it is probably awfully rare that a rifle is used in a criminal act (sniper crime of last year not withstanding).

" The countries that have banned guns have seen a significant decline in violent crimes. "

That's categegorically untrue, and I'm glad Renz posted the links to prove it!

Just for grins, here's another one . . .

The only people that would turn in guns if banned would be the law abiding citizens and good people of this country who most of us would think twice about them owning them.

The criminals/gang members who committ violent acts such as murder, robbery, and other acts arent going to be scared off by "stiff penalties" Those crimes they committ already warrant stiff penalties and have enhancement penalties already added on if committed with a gun. I really dont feel someone who will commit a crime with the possability of facing 20+ years in prison is going to have a different outlook because the gun hes using to committ the crime is now banned.

You are right the numbers of guns would go down slowly but only a little IMO. Most good people who belive in the right to bear arms would not turn them in. While the criminals would most certainly not turn them in.

But you raise an interesting question. Say guns were banned. Do you take them away from the police who would be responsible for enforcing these laws as well? Im sure some would say yes. To me I say that would be insane!

The problems we these findings, is that they haven't been done over the long haul. I agree with ACB34 (Cubbie) that over time, our good police officers, FBI, and other agencies, would take guns away from people, and slowly but surely, gun crimes would decrease dramatically.

Most gun deaths in America aren't related to crime any way. Many reported gun deaths are suicides and accidents, not murders.

But I also agree with Cubbie on another point. If guns were banned, I would only want a ban on handguns and machine guns-type weapons. Hunting rifles are impractical for criminal use, and I would have no problem with Billy Joe Jim Bob running around shooting deer.

It would still be impossible, however, so I don't really take a stance on this topic either way. I just want others to control their guns and I want my elected officials to make gun laws that make's gun ownership harder.

No you don't take away the guns from the police. I mean, IMO, there is no argument there because the police would still need them. Banning would never ELIMINATE but it would reduce and by that fact alone, these violent crimes would decline as well. That is just simple statistics.

I agree, it would be insane to take guns away from police. If an officer is going after a guy who has a gun (and the police mean to arrest him for a crime and confiscate the weapon) why would anyone expect the police to go in unarmed and ask for surrender? That attitude is the insane one...not allowing the police to keep weapons.

Shane I find your stance on this perhaps the MOST interesting of anyones since you are a police officer. I would have guessed you would have been out there saying banning guns (or at least certain types) would make your life a hell of alot easier. If I am reading you right, you are against banning guns of any kind.

I do not wish to ban all guns - I have no problem with people hunting, etc. I don't have problems with most handguns, either - I know people that hunt with them, as well.

What burns me are:

1) Assault rifles, semi-automatic guns, automatics, etc.
These have no legitimate sporting or self-defense use.

2) Cheap handguns

3) Unregulated gun sales.

The second amendment is not a free licence to personally own any weapon made by man, and it's origins/intent are outdated.

I would like to see guns registered, and their owners liable for them, and the sale/resale regulated.

I know Rehnquist, Thomas and Scalia will disagree with that, and I hope that O'Connor and Kennedy are conservative enough to realise that some documents are never outdated.
