Indeed, of the 13 states whose anti-sodomy statutes were struck down last Thursday, 10 were once slave states of the South. In what has always been the main event in American history -- the battle to expand the definition of "men" in Jefferson's mighty line on who's created equal -- these are the states that have had to be dragged along kicking and screaming.

This is why state's rights are nul and void. You can't count on all states to treat all of its citizens equally.

If so, tell me why I should be banned from teaching........
Jon are you surprised by this?

The very object of Conservatism is maintaining the status quo. I'm not taking a shot at all conservatives, but that is clearly the agenda of the right.

Nope. Sodom was destroyed because of their sin. I suppose they were not very hospitable, but they were also fornicators.

Yes, I agree 100% with the Justice Scalia, and many other do, but they will probably not admit it.

I do not want a gay person teaching my kids. Having said that, I don't give a rat's ass about my business partner's sexuality.

My hairstylist is gay, my doctor is gay, I have a lot of gay friends, but I do not want them teaching my children.
Does that make sense at all ?

Now to answer your question, you should not be banned from teaching, but I should not have to pay your salary.
Again, individual states should choose what to teach and who to hire. I am going to send my kids to a private Christian school unless something changes in the next 10 years or so.

... some people are afraid of a gay teacher for their kids. Fact is, the vast majority of pedophiles are SECRET homos - fronting as straight, married or maybe catholic priests. Openly gay men have places to go to get what they want....

Acctually, let me extrapolate on that.
I agree Andi, that is definitely one reason, but for me as a conservative Christian, there is a bigger issue:

I am going to teach my kids the traditional values and Judeo- Christian morality, and I don't want gays telling my kids that being gay is normal, that there is no right and wrong, that it wasn't their choice.

It's not your sexuality, but rather your worldview and philosophy.

ROTFLMAO.

NAU's Education Department is one of the top-rated in the nation, far ahead of any others in the state.

But how does being gay affect how I would teach Math or History?

A good teacher should leave his personal bias at the door, just as I would expect any one to do. One of my favorite teachers in HS was a ferverant Christian, but he taught physics and Chemistry, and left his personal beliefs at the door.

My parents (Dad is a minister) oppose religion in schools for one reason - they believe that is not an appropriate subject for a public school. They wanted to control what values/morality I was taught, and they did it at home and at church. School is for learning facts.

So you would be comfortable with a teacher that brainwashes kids, as long as you agree with him?

John, I agree with some of the things you say, but listen, there are not many "ideal/ perfect" teachers. If somebody asks me for an oppinion about abortion- what do I do?

I can not discuss many issues without using my philosophy and worldview. That's who I am, that's who you are, that who we all are.

Not true - pedophiles are generally neither straight or gay - they have this obsessive desire for young - and it usually doesn't matter whether it is a boy or girl.

And the majority of pedophilia/sexual abuse in schools involves men with girls, so I guess we should ban men in general from teaching.

If you are a math teacher, you say nothing, and direct them to their parents/clergymen/school counsellor. Giving abortion advice as a teacher, whether pro or con is inappropriate.

opk - that was a little harsh - sorry.

you said:

Which implies that I could not leave my philosophy at the door - you would be afraid that I would somehow influence your kids to a view contrary to what you believed.

Which also indicates that you would only approve of a teacher that believed exactly as you do.
